In brief

New York in brief

  • 1

    Pay the subway contactless (OMNY)

The MetroCard retired in January 2026. A ride costs $3 per tap of a bank card or phone, capped at $35 a week: every ride after that is free.

  • 2

    Book observation decks ahead

Empire State from $44, Top of the Rock $45, SUMMIT One Vanderbilt around $45. Dynamic pricing: sunset slots run $10-20 more.

  • 3

CityPASS if you plan 4-5 attractions

$164 (~€150) for 5 attractions including the Empire State and the Natural History Museum, valid 9 days. Real savings of about 40% versus single tickets.

  • 4

Staten Island Ferry: the free Statue view

The orange ferry is free, runs 24/7 and passes 400 m from the Statue of Liberty. The official ferry that lands on Liberty Island costs $32.50 with Ellis Island.

  • 5

    Budget for tipping

18 to 20% at restaurants, and it is not optional. With tax (8.875% added at the till), a $20 dish ends up around $26.

FAQ

New York FAQ

How many days do you need in New York? +
Four full days for the classics: Lower Manhattan, Midtown, Central Park and one Brooklyn neighborhood. A week adds Harlem, Queens, Coney Island and breathing room. Three days is doable but punishing: expect 15 km of walking a day.
What budget for a week in New York? +
Around €1,700 per person backpacker-style (€500 flight, hostel, street food), €2,800 in comfort (3* hotel, restaurants, 4-5 paid attractions), and over €5,000 premium. Lodging is what sinks budgets: booking 3-4 months ahead changes the bill.
Which pass: CityPASS or New York Pass? +
CityPASS ($164, 5 attractions, 9 days) suits a first 4-6 day trip at a normal pace. Unlimited passes like the New York Pass only pay off from 3 attractions a day, an exhausting cadence. If you only want 2 paid sights, single tickets are enough.
Do you need an ESTA for New York? +
Yes. The ESTA costs $40 since September 30, 2025, is applied for online on the official CBP site and stays valid 2 years. Allow 72 hours for processing. Biometric passport required. See our [United States entry guide](/en/destinations/united-states/practical/visa-usa/).
Which deck: Empire State, Top of the Rock or SUMMIT? +
Top of the Rock for the best view (the Empire State is in it, Central Park below). SUMMIT One Vanderbilt for the mirrored-room experience, extremely photogenic. The Empire State for the legend and midnight hours. All three run $44-55: pick one.
How do you get from JFK to Manhattan? +
AirTrain ($8.50) then the E train or LIRR: 60-75 minutes, about $12 total. Yellow cab: ~$70 flat fare before tolls and tip, 45-90 minutes depending on traffic. At night or with three suitcases the cab earns its keep; otherwise the subway does the job.
Is New York safe? +
Yes in tourist areas, including at night. The real precautions are the subway after midnight (stay in the middle cars) and pickpockets around Times Square. Skip street ticket sellers and the 'free' CDs that turn into a shakedown.
When is New York least crowded? +
January-February: hotels 30-40% cheaper, no lines, but -5°C. Otherwise early May and late September combine mild weather with reasonable crowds. Avoid Thanksgiving, the year-end holidays and US spring break (mid-March) if crowds wear you down.
