Adapt by season

Adapt to desert and mountains

The grand tour mixes desert (Kyzylkum, Aral Sea) and mountains (Fergana, Tian Shan). From April to June, the mountains are green and the passes clear; in September-October, the desert becomes bearable again. Avoid July-August, when Karakalpakstan tops 45°C, and winter for the snowy passes. The ideal window stays May and September.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In September 2024, the yurt night by the Aral Sea, after the Moynaq ship graveyard: the starry sky there is one of the most beautiful I've seen.
  • The Fergana Valley for living craftwork: ikat silk in Margilan, ceramics in Rishtan, far from the crowds.
  • The Savitsky museum in Nukus, a Russian avant-garde treasure hidden at the desert's edge.
  • Keep 4 nights per major city: a month finally allows the slow travel this country deserves.

⚠️ Would change

  • Skip Termez if the Buddhist south appeals less, and extend the Aral.
  • Do the desert legs overnight in a berth to gain days.
  • In summer, reverse: Fergana mountains and Chimgan first, desert at month's end.
  • Add Boysun (southern mountains) between Bukhara and Termez if you like hiking.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Isn't a month too long for Uzbekistan? +
No, it's the format that reveals the country beyond the Silk Road cities: Fergana Valley, Aral Sea, Karakalpakstan and the Buddhist south, with real pauses.
Is the 30-day visa enough for this trip? +
Yes for most visa-free nationals. EU citizens stay visa-free up to 30 days, which covers this exact circuit. Passport valid 6 months after return; check your nationality.
Is the Aral Sea trip worth it? +
Yes, it's one of the highlights: Moynaq ship graveyard, Ustyurt plateau, yurt night. Count a 2-day 4x4 expedition (~€180), arranged from Nukus.
What budget for 30 days? +
Count around €2,600 backpacker, €3,500 comfort and €5,200 and up premium, flight from Paris included, per person.
What's the best period for this grand tour? +
May and September-October: green mountains in spring, bearable desert in autumn. Avoid July-August, when Karakalpakstan tops 45°C.
Do you need a 4x4 and guide for the Aral and the desert? +
Yes for the Aral: no paved road, a 4x4 with driver is essential. For the Khorezm fortresses near Nukus, a guide helps make sense of the ancient sites.
