How to get around
A week with no domestic flight: everything runs by shuttle and train from Hanoi. Distances stay short, Halong and Ninh Binh are under 2h30 from the capital.
Shuttle Hanoi → Halong
€10-15 · 2h30 · on the new expressway
Halong Bay cruise
from €80 · overnight on a junk
Train Hanoi → Ninh Binh
€4-6 · 2h · frequent departures
Adapt by season
This itinerary stays in the North, where winter (December-February) can be cool and misty over Halong Bay (15-18°C), and summer (June-August) hot and humid with typhoon risk. The best windows are October-November and March-April: clear skies over Halong, green rice fields in Ninh Binh. Avoid Tet (17 February 2026) when everything slows for a week.
