Adapt by season

The North doesn't share the South's weather

This itinerary stays in the North, where winter (December-February) can be cool and misty over Halong Bay (15-18°C), and summer (June-August) hot and humid with typhoon risk. The best windows are October-November and March-April: clear skies over Halong, green rice fields in Ninh Binh. Avoid Tet (17 February 2026) when everything slows for a week.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In November 2024, I took the 8am Halong cruise departure rather than the noon one: the bay was still in morning mist, almost no other boat until 11am.
  • Keeping a night onboard a junk: the sunrise over the bay is well worth the surcharge.
  • The egg coffee at Giang in Hanoi, an institution since 1946.

⚠️ Would change

  • Trim half a day in Hanoi to add a night in Ninh Binh, more restful.
  • Prefer a cruise in Lan Ha Bay, next door and far less crowded than Halong.
  • Over 7 days, skip the Center (Hue, Hoi An): the flight eats a day.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Is one week in Vietnam enough? +
Yes for the North: Hanoi, Halong Bay and Ninh Binh form a compact triangle, no domestic flight. Trying to go down to Saigon over 7 days loses two days to flying.
Should you sleep on the junk in Halong? +
Yes, that's what makes the difference. The night onboard allows the sunrise and early kayaking, before the day trips from Hanoi arrive.
Which airport for arrival and return? +
Hanoi (Noi Bai) for both, since the itinerary stays in the North. Most Europe flights leave via Doha, Dubai or Bangkok.
Is this itinerary suitable for families? +
Yes, distances are short and activities gentle: rowboat, cycling, caves. Kids love the cruise. Bring insect repellent for Ninh Binh.
What's the best period? +
October-November and March-April: clear skies over Halong, green rice fields. Avoid July-August (heat, typhoons) and Tet week (17 February 2026).
How much for a week all in? +
Count about €900 backpacker, €1,250 comfort and €2,400 premium, flight from Paris included, per person.
