In 2026, travelling far without draining your account is still doable. Twelve countries let you live on the ground for €25 to €45 a day backpacker-style, and €50 to €90 in comfort mode. The figures below come from recent local price checks (lodging, meals, transport), not vague estimates.

Our single criterion for this ranking: the cost of living on the ground, once the flight is paid for. A destination can show a pricey plane ticket yet prove very cheap day to day (Sri Lanka, Madagascar). Conversely, some nearby destinations stay affordable flight included (Albania, Morocco, Tunisia).

We prioritised countries the team already knows and documents, so you can dig into each destination through its full guide. The ranking runs from the most accessible logistically to the most distant.
