The night train is back for good. After two decades of axed routes, Europe reopened around a dozen overnight connections between 2021 and 2026, driven by demand for low-carbon travel and by the €500 million ÖBB poured into 33 brand-new Nightjet sets. An overnight journey is a moving hotel, one flight saved, and often a sunrise over the Alps or the Baltic.

This selection ranks 10 routes by beauty of the journey, not by cabin comfort. We left out the purely functional lines (flat-out Paris-Toulouse) in favour of those worth taking for the scenery at first light. Prices are 2026 starting fares pulled from operator sites in June 2026, before promotions.

An honest warning: a night train isn't always restful. In a 6-berth couchette, sleep stays light. To truly sleep, aim for a private cabin. It costs more, but there's no comparison.

1

Alps · Nightjet ÖBB

Munich - Venice

The network's most spectacular line. Evening departure from Munich, an overnight crossing of the Tyrol and the Brenner Pass, then a rare wake-up as the train glides across the lagoon causeway into Venezia Santa Lucia, a station sitting right on the Grand Canal. New-generation sets with in-cabin showers and solo mini-cabins. Book a left-hand seat for the Dolomites at dawn.

New for 2026 · European Sleeper

Paris - Berlin

The iconic line came back on 26 March 2026 after nine years gone, revived by the Belgian-Dutch cooperative operator European Sleeper. Evening departure from Paris-Est, wake-up in Brandenburg, arrival at Berlin Hauptbahnhof. From 13 July 2026, a Hamburg stop is possible. Three departures a week each way, slightly dated rolling stock but a one-of-a-kind feel.

3

Scotland · Caledonian Sleeper

London - Fort William

The only way to wake up in the middle of the Highlands. Evening departure from London Euston, and at dawn the train splits so the Highlander portion takes the West Highland Line to Fort William, at the foot of Ben Nevis. Lochs, the Glenfinnan viaduct (the Hogwarts Express one), peat bogs. Runs nightly except Saturdays. The reclining seat stays affordable, the private cabin pushes the bill up.

4

Scandinavia · Snälltåget

Berlin - Stockholm

Fifteen hours linking Germany to Sweden via Hamburg, Copenhagen and the Øresund bridge. Run by Swedish private operator Snälltåget, the route stitches together three countries and a strait. Crossing the Øresund at sunrise, sea on both sides, is the highlight that earns the early wake-up.
