Itinerary logistics

Australia is a continent: East Coast distances are huge. Over 7 days, one domestic flight links Sydney to Cairns (3h, against 24h by road). The rest is by train, bus and rental car. Budget ~€120 for domestic transport.

Adapt by season

The tropical coast sets its season

Australia is in the southern hemisphere: summer (December to February) is hot. For the tropical East Coast (Cairns, Great Barrier Reef), aim for the dry season from May to October: less humidity, better underwater visibility, and above all outside the stinger season (November to April), when open-sea swimming is unwise without a suit. Sydney stays pleasant almost year-round, mild from September to November.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In July 2024, I booked the Great Barrier trip to an Outer Reef site rather than the inshore reefs: 1h30 more by boat, but living corals, turtles and 20 m visibility, where the coastal sites were bleached and crowded. The dry season guaranteed a calm sea.
  • Keep Cairns and the Reef for the end: you finish underwater after the buzz of Sydney.
  • The Bondi-to-Coogee coastal walk in Sydney: 6 km of cliffs and beaches, free and unforgettable.
  • The Blue Mountains as a day trip: eucalyptus as far as the eye can see.
  • The Kuranda Skyrail above the canopy rather than the road.

⚠️ Would change

  • Fly Sydney → Cairns as early as day 3 if you prioritise diving.
  • Add 1 night in Port Douglas, quieter than Cairns, as a base for the Daintree.
  • Skip Bondi on a weekend (crowds) for a northern beach (Manly).

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Is one week enough for Australia? +
For a first taste of the East Coast, yes: Sydney and the Great Barrier Reef give the city/nature contrast. But Australia is a continent: the Outback, Uluru or Melbourne need 2 to 4 more weeks.
Do you need a domestic flight in Australia? +
Yes: Sydney-Cairns is 2,400 km, or 24h by road versus 3h by air. Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin link the East Coast cities for €100 to €150 if you book early.
Can you swim in the Great Barrier Reef year-round? +
On Outer Reef trips, yes (a suit is provided). On the tropical coast beaches, swimming is unwise from November to April due to stingers (box jellyfish). The dry season (May-October) is the safest.
What budget for a week in Australia? +
Budget €2,200 backpacking and €2,800 in comfort per person, flight from Europe included. The international flight (12,000 km) and the high cost of living weigh on the budget.
What is the best time? +
May to October for the tropical coast (Cairns, Reef): dry season, outside stinger season, better underwater visibility. Sydney is pleasant almost year-round. The southern summer (Dec-Feb) is hot and humid in the north.
Do you need a visa for Australia? +
Yes: an eVisitor (free) or ETA electronic visa is required for most Western travellers, applied for online before departure. Valid 12 months, stays of 3 months maximum. Passport valid for the length of the stay.
