Adapt by season

Follow the dry season as you head north

This itinerary climbs the East Coast, from Sydney (temperate) to Cairns (tropical). The ideal window is May to October: dry season in the north, outside stinger season, calm sea for the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef. In the southern summer (December to February), the north turns hot, humid and risky for swimming (stingers). If you travel in summer, favour the southern half of the route (Sydney, Byron Bay) and limit time in the far north.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In August 2024, at Hill Inlet in the Whitsundays, I climbed to the lookout at falling tide: the white silica sand swirling in the turquoise water drew shifting patterns, the kind of scene no photo captures. The dry season guaranteed a perfectly blue sky.
  • Climbing the coast from south to north following the warmth: you gain tropics by the day.
  • Whitehaven Beach by sailing cruise rather than speedboat: time to savour the 74 islands.
  • K'gari (Fraser) by 4WD on the beach: driving 75-Mile Beach is one of a kind.
  • Keep Cairns and the Reef for the end: the grand underwater finale.

⚠️ Would change

  • Skip Brisbane (1 night) if time is tight: it is mainly a transit stop.
  • Add 1 day to the Whitsundays rather than Byron Bay if you love sailing.
  • Take a direct Whitsundays → Cairns flight to avoid the long coastal road.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Is two weeks enough for Australia? +
For the East Coast, yes: Sydney, Byron Bay, Fraser, the Whitsundays and Cairns give a full panorama. But the Red Centre (Uluru) and the south (Melbourne, Great Ocean Road) need 2 more weeks.
Should you rent a car or take flights? +
Both: flights for the long distances (Sydney-Byron, Whitsundays-Cairns) and a car for the local legs (Byron-Brisbane, Daintree). All-car over 2,400 km would take too many days.
Are the Whitsundays worth the detour? +
Yes: 74 islands, Whitehaven Beach and its white silica sand, snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef. The 2-3 day sailing cruise is the signature East Coast experience.
What budget for 2 weeks in Australia? +
Budget €3,200 backpacking and €3,900 in comfort per person, flight from Europe included. The excursions (reef, Fraser, Whitsundays) and the high cost of living weigh on the budget.
What is the best time? +
May to October, dry season in the north: outside stinger season, calm sea for the Whitsundays and the Reef, better underwater visibility. The southern summer (Dec-Feb) is hot and humid in the north.
Do you need a visa for Australia? +
Yes: an eVisitor (free) or ETA electronic visa is required for most Western travellers, applied for online before departure. Valid 12 months, stays of 3 months maximum.
