In brief
Book Yulara months ahead
All accommodation belongs to Ayers Rock Resort, from the campground to the luxury lodge. No alternative within 100 km: rooms sell out early, especially May to September.
Park entry: A$38 for 3 days
The Uluru-Kata Tjuta pass is bought online at uluru.gov.au (free under 18). Three days is exactly how long you need on site.
The climb has been closed since October 2019
Uluru is a sacred site for the Anangu, its traditional owners. You walk around it, not up it. The base walk offers far more than the old climb ever did.
Walk early, no exceptions
Trail sections close from 11am whenever the forecast hits 36°C or more. From November to February, finish any walk before 10am and carry 3 litres of water per person.
Reserve Field of Light and Wintjiri Wiru
Bruce Munro's 50,000 lights (A$50) and the Anangu drone show Wintjiri Wiru (from A$210) are booked online and sometimes sell out a week ahead.
Must-see
A flat 10.6 km loop around the monolith: ribbed walls, waterholes, rock art and sacred sections to respect. Start at dawn.
The rock shifts from ochre to blood red in 20 minutes. Dedicated car parks on the west side; arrive 45 min early for the front row.
The eastern platform frames Uluru and Kata Tjuta in one panorama. Backlight reveals the silhouette before the blaze.
7.4 km among the 36 red domes, 50 km from Uluru. Wilder, tougher and often more memorable than the base walk.
2.6 km return through a chasm between two giant domes. The short, shaded option when heat closes everything else.
2 km narrated free of charge by a park ranger: Anangu history, rock art, tjukurpa law. Departs 8am (Oct-Apr) or 10am (May-Sep).
Visit before the base walk: tjukurpa, community crafts, desert art galleries. No photos inside.
Bruce Munro's 50,000 glowing spheres planted in the desert, extended until 2027. Visited after nightfall.
1,200 drones tell the Anangu Mala story above the desert. Twilight option from A$210, dinner show at A$295.
15 to 36 minutes over Uluru and Kata Tjuta from Yulara. The only way to grasp the scale of the Red Centre.
