In brief

Uluru in brief

  • 1

    Book Yulara months ahead

All accommodation belongs to Ayers Rock Resort, from the campground to the luxury lodge. No alternative within 100 km: rooms sell out early, especially May to September.

  • 2

Park entry: A$38 for 3 days

The Uluru-Kata Tjuta pass is bought online at uluru.gov.au (free under 18). Three days is exactly how long you need on site.

  • 3

The climb has been closed since October 2019

Uluru is a sacred site for the Anangu, its traditional owners. You walk around it, not up it. The base walk offers far more than the old climb ever did.

  • 4

    Walk early, no exceptions

Trail sections close from 11am whenever the forecast hits 36°C or more. From November to February, finish any walk before 10am and carry 3 litres of water per person.

  • 5

Reserve Field of Light and Wintjiri Wiru

Bruce Munro's 50,000 lights (A$50) and the Anangu drone show Wintjiri Wiru (from A$210) are booked online and sometimes sell out a week ahead.

FAQ

Uluru FAQ

Can you still climb Uluru? +
No. The climb closed permanently on 26 October 2019 at the request of the Anangu, the traditional owners for whom the summit is sacred. The 10.6 km base walk, the guided walks and the viewing areas deliver a richer experience than the old climb, without breaching tjukurpa law.
How much is entry to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park? +
A$38 (about €23) per adult for a pass valid 3 consecutive days, free for under-18s. Buy online at uluru.gov.au; it's checked at the entry gate. The pass covers Uluru and Kata Tjuta, sunrises and sunsets included.
How many days do you need at Uluru? +
Two nights minimum for a sunset, the dawn base walk and Kata Tjuta. Three nights to add Field of Light or Wintjiri Wiru without rushing. The 3-day park pass matches the right length of stay exactly.
When should you avoid Uluru? +
November to February: 38 to 45°C by day, trail sections closed from 11am whenever 36°C is forecast, and clouds of flies. If you have no choice, walk between 6 and 9am and spend afternoons at the pool. The best window remains May to September, with nights sometimes near 0°C.
How do you get to Uluru: direct flight or drive from Alice Springs? +
The direct flight to Ayers Rock (AYQ) from Sydney (3h35), Melbourne or Brisbane is the simplest option. From Alice Springs, count 445 km and 4h30 to 5 h of easy but monotonous driving, never at night because of wildlife. The classic road-trip combo: Alice Springs, Kings Canyon, Uluru over 3 days.
Do you need a car at Uluru? +
It's more comfortable: the park sites sit 20-50 km from Yulara and walk schedules demand dawn starts. Without a car, the Uluru Hop on Hop off bus (~A$65/day) and organised tours cover the essentials, and the internal Yulara shuttle is free.
Why is Uluru sacred? +
For the Anangu, Uluru is physical proof of tjukurpa, the law that binds people, country and creation stories. Each fold in the rock corresponds to a specific episode. Some sections of the base must not be photographed and signs mark them clearly: respecting them is part of the visit.
Do you need a visa for Australia? +
Most European passport holders apply for the free eVisitor (subclass 651) online before departure, for stays of up to 3 months. See our [Australia visa guide](/en/destinations/australia/practical/visa-australia/) for details and other nationalities.
