Adapt by season

Austral summer for the beach, winter for the city

In Brazil the seasons are flipped: the austral summer (December to March) is hot and great for swimming, 28 to 34°C in Rio, but it's also the rainy spell and Carnival time (book very early). From June to August, the austral winter is drier and cooler (20 to 26°C), ideal for walking the city without suffocating. For Ilha Grande and Paraty, avoid the heavy January-February rains if you care about the trails.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In July 2024 I climbed Sugarloaf at opening, 8am: Guanabara bay clear, no queue, perfect light. By noon, two hours of waiting and heat haze. Book the very first slot.
  • Staying in Ipanema rather than Copacabana: calmer beaches, neighborhood restaurants, a walk to Arpoador at sunset.
  • The roda de samba at Pedra do Sal on Monday night: live music, free, at the cradle of samba.
  • Ilha Grande car-free to finish: you slow down, and Lopes Mendes is worth every step of the hike.
  • The guided, responsible favela visit with a local guide: a fair look at the city.

⚠️ Would change

  • Add 1 night on Ilha Grande to explore the beaches on the far side of the island.
  • Skip Paraty (1 symbolic night) if you'd rather maximize time on Ilha Grande.
  • Don't cram it all: Rio deserves 4 full days, don't cut it short for the Costa Verde.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Do you need a visa for Brazil? +
No for most EU travelers: no visa for a tourist stay up to 90 days. Passport valid for the duration of the stay; a return or onward ticket may be requested at boarding.
Is Rio dangerous for tourists? +
Rio calls for common sense: no flashy jewelry or phones, favor Uber at night, avoid deserted beaches after dark. Tourist areas (Copacabana, Ipanema, downtown) stay busy and lively. Favela visits are done only with a local guide.
Is one week enough for Brazil? +
For Rio and the Costa Verde, yes: the city, Paraty and Ilha Grande give a fine overview without a domestic flight. Since Brazil is huge, adding the Nordeste, the Amazon or Iguaçu needs at least 2 weeks and flights.
What's the best period for this itinerary? +
April to October, the austral winter, drier and cooler (20 to 26°C), ideal for walking the city. The austral summer (December to March) is hot and stormy, and Carnival sends Rio prices soaring.
How do you reach Ilha Grande from Rio? +
By bus to Conceição de Jacareí or Angra dos Reis (2h30 to 3h), then a boat (50 min) to Vila do Abraão. The island bans cars, everything is on foot or by water taxi.
Is this itinerary family-friendly? +
Yes: distances stay short, the beaches and boats please children. Bring high-protection sunscreen and water, Rio's heat is strong from December to March.
