In brief

Dubrovnik in brief

  • 1

Walk the full circuit of the city walls

Nearly 2 km of UNESCO-listed ramparts, the highlight of any visit. Go early to avoid the heat and the cruise crowds.

  • 2

Skip July and August if you can

May, June and September offer the same light without the crush or inflated prices. The old town empties once the cruise ships leave.

  • 3

Stay outside the walls for the budget

The old town is gorgeous but pricey and noisy. Lapad and Ploče are a 10-15 minute bus away, quieter and more affordable.

  • 4

    Bring good shoes

The marble of the Stradun is slippery and the lanes climb in steep stairs. Forget heels and wheeled suitcases.

  • 5

Make the most of the sea and islands

Lokrum, Banje beach and the coves of Cavtat are minutes away. Swimming is the other face of the city.

FAQ

Dubrovnik FAQ

How many days to visit Dubrovnik? +
Two days are enough for the must-sees: the walls, the old town, the Mount Srđ cable car and Lokrum Island. A third day allows a trip to Cavtat, the Pelješac Peninsula or Montenegro.
What's the best neighborhood to stay in Dubrovnik? +
The old town (Stari Grad) for the atmosphere, if the budget allows. Lapad for the best quiet-to-price ratio, with its beaches. Ploče for views of the walls and upscale hotels.
Is Dubrovnik expensive? +
Yes, it's one of the most expensive cities in Croatia, especially in the old town in summer. Staying in Lapad or Gruž, eating in konobas and visiting in the shoulder season cuts the bill noticeably.
When should you walk the walls to avoid the crowds? +
Right at opening around 8am, before the cruise ships arrive and before the midday heat. Late afternoon, once the cruise crowds leave, is also pleasant with lovely light.
Do you need a visa for Dubrovnik? +
No for French and EU nationals: Croatia is in the European Union and the Schengen Area. A valid ID card or passport is enough. See our Croatia visa guide.
