In brief
Walk the full circuit of the city walls
Nearly 2 km of UNESCO-listed ramparts, the highlight of any visit. Go early to avoid the heat and the cruise crowds.
Skip July and August if you can
May, June and September offer the same light without the crush or inflated prices. The old town empties once the cruise ships leave.
Stay outside the walls for the budget
The old town is gorgeous but pricey and noisy. Lapad and Ploče are a 10-15 minute bus away, quieter and more affordable.
Bring good shoes
The marble of the Stradun is slippery and the lanes climb in steep stairs. Forget heels and wheeled suitcases.
Make the most of the sea and islands
Lokrum, Banje beach and the coves of Cavtat are minutes away. Swimming is the other face of the city.
Must-see
Nearly 2 km of UNESCO-listed ramparts with towers and bastions. The full loop offers the finest views over rooftops and sea.
The grand pedestrian artery of polished marble that crosses the old town, lined with palaces and cafes.
A four-minute ride to a 412m panorama over the old town and the Elaphiti Islands.
Fortress perched on a 37m rock outside the walls, nicknamed the Gibraltar of Dubrovnik.
Gothic-Renaissance gem that housed the government of the old Republic of Ragusa. Now a history museum.
Dubrovnik stood in for King's Landing. The Jesuit Stairs, Lovrijenac and the walls top the list.
The city's best-known beach, steps from the walls, with a direct view of the old town and Lokrum.
A nature-reserve island 15 minutes by ferry. Botanical gardens, a monastery, swimming coves and free-roaming peacocks.
Baroque church at the heart of the old town, whose treasury holds precious reliquaries.
The highest point of the walls, an emblematic round tower offering the queen view over the old town.
Choose your district
Sleeping within the walls, at the heart of the scene. Magical but pricey, noisy at night and everything is on foot. From €130/night.
Atmosphere
Green peninsula with beaches and a pedestrian promenade. The best quiet-to-price ratio, 15 minutes by bus from the center. From €70/night.
★ Recommended
Just east of the walls, on the Banje beach side. Old-town views and upscale hotels. From €110/night.
Views
The port and ferry district, more local and lively around its market. Handy for day trips. From €60/night.
