In brief

Cairo in brief

  • 1

Book the Grand Egyptian Museum online

Opened to the public in November 2025, 2 km from the pyramids. Timed-slot ticket mandatory via the official site, card payment only. Around 1,200 EGP (~€22) for non-residents.

  • 2

    Pyramids of Giza at opening

700 EGP (~€13) for the plateau, 1,500 EGP to enter Khufu. Arrive at 8am to dodge the bus crowds and the heat. Card-only tickets at the gate.

  • 3

Khan el-Khalili: early morning or after 8pm

The historic souk comes alive at dusk. Mandatory stop at El Fishawy café, 250 years old. Haggle at 40-50% of the asking price on tourist items.

  • 4

    Uber and Careem everywhere

Reliable pricing, English-friendly. Always prefer the app to white taxis with no meter, especially from the airport (inflated flat fares). About 200-300 EGP from downtown to Giza.

  • 5

    Cash nearly useless, card everywhere

Since 2025, 99% of archaeological sites refuse cash. Keep 500 EGP in notes for taxis, baksheesh and street stalls, everything else goes on card.

FAQ

Cairo FAQ

How many days to visit Cairo? +
Two days for the Pyramids of Giza, the Grand Egyptian Museum, Khan el-Khalili and the Citadel. A third day lets you add Saqqara and Dahshur, or the historic Egyptian Museum on Tahrir. Four days to breathe between sites and explore Coptic Cairo at a slow pace.
Is the Grand Egyptian Museum worth it? +
Yes, without question. Inaugurated in November 2025, 2 km from the pyramids, it gathers 100,000 pieces including the full Tutankhamun collection (never shown together before) and Khufu's solar boat. Online booking with a timed slot is mandatory.
What's the best neighborhood to stay in Cairo? +
Zamalek for calm: green island on the Nile, cafés, restaurants, 15 minutes by Uber from the Egyptian Museum and Khan el-Khalili. Giza to wake up facing the pyramids, but far from downtown. Downtown Tahrir for the buzz and metro access, noisier.
Is Cairo safe for travelers? +
Yes overall. The main risks are pickpockets at Khan el-Khalili, no-meter drivers at the airport and touts around the pyramids. Stick to Uber or Careem, refuse spontaneous guides on the Giza plateau, and negotiate firmly before climbing onto a camel.
Do you need a visa for Cairo? +
Yes for most nationalities: e-visa online at $25 (valid 30 days, extendable to 90), or visa on arrival at the same rate at the airport. See our [Egypt visa guide](/en/destinations/egypt/practical/visa-egypt/) for details and other nationalities.
When to avoid Cairo? +
June to August, 35 to 40°C by day with heavy pollution, archaeological sites with no shade get exhausting. April can hit the khamsin, sandstorm wind that cuts visibility. The sweet spot runs October to April, peak in December and January.
