The essentials
When to go to Greece, in brief
May to June: the prime window
Mild to warm, 24-30°C, sea warming up and crowds still light. June shows the islands at their best, beaches and villages included.
September-October: the other window
Sea still warm (24-25°C in October on Rhodes and Crete), dropping prices, skies still dry. Arguably the best overall time.
July-August, scorching and packed
35°C and up, the meltemi wind in the Cyclades, islands at saturation. Best kept for swimmers ready to face the crowds.
Athens and Crete off-season
The sightseeing window stays excellent into November, even winter for the sites. Crete holds 24-25°C in October.
The Cyclades meltemi
This northerly wind blows hard in July-August over Mykonos, Santorini and Naxos. Refreshing, but disruptive for ferries and beaches.
Festivals to plan around
Orthodox Easter (12 April 2026), the year's biggest highlight, and the Athens-Epidaurus Festival in summer.

Our analysis
Greece runs to the rhythm of the Aegean. The best windows are May-June and September-October, when the water is warm but the crowds still reasonable. Summer peaks in heat and numbers, winter empties the islands. September often wins.
Spring and autumn, the prime windows
From May to June, the sea warms up (to 24°C), the sky stays dry and crowds remain light. It is the best time to combine Athens, the Cyclades and the first swims without facing the summer crush.
From September to October, the water stays warm, prices drop and the sky stays dry. Crete and Rhodes extend the beach season into October, with the sea still at 24-25°C. To pair beaches, sites and soft prices, September is arguably the best month of the year.
The crowded summer and the dormant winter
July and August stack up the drawbacks: 35°C and more, ceiling-high prices, islands at saturation. In the Cyclades, the meltemi, that northerly wind, blows hard and disrupts ferries and beaches. Best kept for swimmers who accept the crowds, visiting the sites early in the morning.
Winter splits Greece in two. Athens and Crete stay pleasant for the ancient sites, sometimes into the heart of winter. But most Cyclades islands close hotels and ferry links from November to March. Off-season, aim for the mainland rather than the archipelago.
