The dry season drives the whole itinerary

Over a month with volcanoes, diving and trekking, the dry season (May-October) is nearly mandatory. It's the window when Komodo and the Flores sea are calm for the cruise, the Java volcanoes are clear at sunrise, and Sumatra is less humid for the orangutan trek. In the rainy season (November-March), Komodo and the Gili become unreliable (cruises cancelled): start in the west (Sumatra, Java) and end in Bali instead.

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • • In September 2022, I saw a female orangutan and her baby five meters away in the Bukit Lawang jungle: that moment, the very first of the trip, set the tone for the whole month.
  • • Opening with Sumatra: few travelers go, and it's the most memorable stop.
  • • A multi-day Komodo cruise rather than a day trip from Labuan Bajo.
  • • The Kelimutu volcano in Flores at sunrise, three lakes of different colors.

⚠️ Would change

  • • If Sumatra feels daunting logistically, swap it for 4 more days in Flores.
  • • Cut south Bali to 3 nights and add a night in Komodo.
  • • In the rainy season, skip Komodo (unreliable cruises) and stay west (Sumatra, Java, Bali).
  • • Add Lombok and the Rinjani (volcano) between the Gili and Komodo for hikers.

Is a month too much for Indonesia? +
No, it's barely enough to link the main islands. This month lets you add Sumatra (orangutans) and the east (Komodo, Flores) to the classic Java-Bali-Gili triangle, otherwise impossible to fit in.
How many domestic flights should you plan? +
Three are enough: Sumatra → Java, Bali → Komodo (Labuan Bajo) and Flores → Bali. The distances between islands are too great for boats alone.
Is the Komodo cruise essential? +
To see the dragons, the pink beach and dive with manta rays, yes. A 2-3 day cruise from Labuan Bajo is far more complete than a day trip.
Is this itinerary suitable for families? +
With sporty teens, yes; with young children, it's ambitious (jungle trek, night climbs, cruise). Lighten it by keeping Bali, the Gili and a short Komodo day trip.
What's the best period for this grand tour? +
May to October, in the dry season: Komodo and the Flores sea calm, Java volcanoes clear, Sumatra less humid. In the rainy season, refocus on the western archipelago.
