Adapt by season

Dry volcanoes, calm sea: aim for the dry season

This itinerary chains two volcanoes (Bromo, Ijen) then the islands. The dry season (May-October) is nearly mandatory: the night volcano climbs are clear and the sea stays calm for speedboats to the Gili. In the rainy season (November-March), the volcanoes are often clouded at sunrise and some crossings are cancelled. If you go then, double your margins on the volcanoes.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In August 2023, I climbed the Ijen at 1am: the blue sulfur flames in the dark, then the turquoise acid lake at daybreak, is the strongest image I keep from the two weeks.
  • Chaining Bromo and Ijen over two short nights: exhausting but unbeatable for the scenery.
  • Entering via Java and exiting via Bali (open-jaw ticket): no backtracking.
  • Nusa Penida after the Gili: you go from flat beaches to dramatic cliffs.

⚠️ Would change

  • If night volcanoes put you off, do Bromo alone and skip the Ijen.
  • Cut Yogyakarta to 2 nights and add a night on the Gili.
  • Swap Nusa Penida for Lombok (Kuta Lombok) for wilder beaches.
  • In the rainy season, skip the Ijen (often in clouds) and keep Bromo.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Should you really do Java and Bali in 14 days? +
Yes, that's what sets this trip apart from a simple beach stay. Java brings the volcanoes (Bromo, Ijen) and temples (Borobudur), Bali the culture and beaches. Linking them by ferry avoids any domestic flight.
Are the volcano climbs hard? +
Bromo is easy (jeep then a short walk). The Ijen needs a 2h night climb, on a steep but accessible trail for a fit walker. A gas mask is provided for the fumes.
Can you do this itinerary without a domestic flight? +
Yes: enter via Yogyakarta, train and jeeps for the volcanoes, ferry to Bali, speedboats between the islands, exit via Denpasar. An open-jaw ticket makes it seamless.
Is this itinerary suitable for families? +
With teens, yes; with young children, lighten it: skip the Ijen (hard night climb), keep Bromo by jeep, Ubud and the Gili. Bring sunscreen and insect repellent.
What's the best period? +
May to October, in the dry season: clear volcanoes at sunrise, calm sea for speedboats. In the rainy season, the volcanoes are often clouded and some crossings cancelled.
How much for 14 days all in? +
Count about €1,700 backpacker, €2,300 comfort and €3,800 premium, flight from Paris included, per person.
