How to get around
This itinerary combines 1 daytime train (Java), jeeps for the volcanoes, 1 Java-Bali ferry, and several speedboats between islands. No domestic flight if you enter via Yogyakarta and exit via Bali.
Train Yogyakarta → Probolinggo
~€15 · 5-6h · toward Bromo
Bromo & Ijen volcano jeeps
night climbs · book with your accommodation
Ferry Java → Bali (Gilimanuk)
~€1 · 45 min · after the Ijen
Speedboats Bali ↔ Gili ↔ Nusa Penida
€20-30/trip · book the day before
Adapt by season
This itinerary chains two volcanoes (Bromo, Ijen) then the islands. The dry season (May-October) is nearly mandatory: the night volcano climbs are clear and the sea stays calm for speedboats to the Gili. In the rainy season (November-March), the volcanoes are often clouded at sunrise and some crossings are cancelled. If you go then, double your margins on the volcanoes.
