A short week: no JR Pass, you buy Shinkansen tickets as you go. The only long leg is Tokyo → Kyoto, covered by the Tokaido Shinkansen in 2h.

🚄

Shinkansen Tokyo → Kyoto

~€70 · 2h · no JR Pass needed over 7 days

💳

Suica / Pasmo (IC card)

rechargeable · metro, bus, konbini · grab one at the airport

🚆

Kyoto ↔ Nara ↔ Osaka

€5-8/trip · JR or Kintetsu · 30-45 min rides

Adapt by season

Sakura, humid summer or momiji

Late March to early April, cherry blossoms fill Kyoto and Tokyo: book 3 months ahead and visit gardens early. Summer (June-August) is hot and humid (30-35°C, June rains): favor air-conditioned museums in the afternoon. Late November brings the red maples (momiji) of Arashiyama and Higashiyama, with often clear skies.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In April 2025, I did Fushimi Inari at 7am: alone in the first torii, while at 10am you shuffle forward. The early start changes everything in Kyoto.
  • Buy a Suica at the airport: no more counting coins in the metro.
  • Keep Tokyo at the start, the city's energy helps reset the jet lag.

⚠️ Would change

  • Skip Osaka and add a night in Kyoto if you prefer temples to neon.
  • Swap Hakone for Kamakura if Fuji is hidden by clouds (common in summer).
  • Over 7 days, skip Hiroshima: the detour eats half a day of transport.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Is one week in Japan enough? +
Yes for a focused first trip: Tokyo plus Kyoto, linked by Shinkansen. Trying to add Hiroshima or Hokkaido over 7 days loses a full day in transport.
Should you buy the JR Pass for a week? +
No. Since the 2023 price hike, the JR Pass (~€460 for 14 days) is no longer worth it for a simple Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka. Buy Shinkansen tickets individually, it's cheaper.
Which airport for arrival and return? +
Arrive in Tokyo (Narita or Haneda), return from Osaka (Kansai, KIX). This open-jaw ticket avoids backtracking and saves half a day.
Is this itinerary suitable for families? +
Yes. The Nara deer and Osaka Castle delight children, and trains are punctual and safe. Bring a folding stroller, as stations have many stairs.
What's the best period? +
Late March to mid-May (cherry blossoms then greenery) and October-November (red maples). Avoid mid-June for the rains and August for the humid heat.
How much for a week all in? +
Count about €1,600 backpacker, €2,100 comfort and €3,800 premium, flight from Paris included, per person.
