Adapt by season

Spring and autumn for hiking

Over two weeks with hiking (Dana, Wadi Mujib, Petra trails), spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are ideal: 20 to 28°C, open trails. Wadi Mujib (the water siq) closes in winter due to flash floods, roughly November to March. Summer bakes in the deserts and the Dead Sea; winter is mild by day but cold at night at Wadi Rum. Check the Mujib opening for your dates.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In April 2025 I gave Petra three days: on the third, the Back Door hike from Little Petra brought me to the Monastery from behind, nearly alone, with an unreal late-afternoon light on the stone.
  • Sleeping two nights at Wadi Rum rather than one: the second day, with no transfer, leaves time to walk far and enjoy the silence.
  • Doing the Dana reserve with a local Bedouin guide: he knows the springs and passes you can't find alone.

⚠️ Would change

  • Skip the desert castle loop if Roman archaeology tires you, and add a night at Dana.
  • Check the Wadi Mujib opening: closed in winter, it's one of the finest water hikes in the country.
  • In summer, schedule Petra and Wadi Rum early and keep the Dead Sea for the hot hours.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Is two weeks too much for Jordan? +
No, it's the ideal format to avoid rushing: the great sites plus the secondary regions (desert castles, Dana reserve, Wadi Mujib). The country is compact but rich; two weeks allow hiking on top of sightseeing.
Is the Dana reserve worth the detour? +
Yes, it's the country's largest nature reserve, from wooded heights down to the desert canyons of Wadi Feynan. It's the nature leg of the route, ideal between the Dead Sea and Petra, with trails for all levels.
Do you need a guide for the hikes? +
For short marked trails (Dana, some at Petra), no. For long treks (Dana to Feynan, off-track Wadi Rum), a local guide is advised: he knows the water, the passes and the safety.
What budget for 14 days? +
Count around €2,100 backpacking, €2,800 in comfort and €4,800 premium, flight from Paris, Jordan Pass and car included, per person.
Is Wadi Mujib open all year? +
No. The Wadi Mujib water siq closes in winter (roughly November to March) due to flash floods. It reopens in spring. Check the dates before scheduling this leg.
What's the best period? +
Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November): mild temperatures and open trails. Summer bakes in the deserts; winter closes Wadi Mujib and makes desert nights very cold.
