When to see the wildebeest migration in the Masai Mara? +

Wildebeest arrive from the Serengeti late June and stay through October. Spectacular Mara River crossings cluster in August and September. Book 6 to 9 months ahead for this window. Off-season, the Big Five remain viewable year-round, the density just drops.

Main reserve or private conservancy? +

For a first safari on a controlled budget, the main reserve (Sekenani, Talek gates) is plenty. For a premium experience, private conservancies (Mara North, Naboisho, Olare Motorogi) offer off-road driving, walking safaris, night drives and far lower vehicle density. Ideal mix: 2 nights reserve + 2 nights conservancy.

What's the Masai Mara entry price in 2026? +

$200 USD per person per day for non-residents in the national reserve, confirmed by Narok County in 2024. Card payment at the gates or bundled into the lodge package. Private conservancies charge a conservancy fee (~$100-150/day) already in the lodge rate.

Should you fly or drive? +

Fly without hesitation for a 3-4 night stay. Safarilink or AirKenya from Wilson Airport in 45 min, ~$300 round trip, airstrip-lodge transfer included. The Nairobi-Mara road is 5 to 6 h with the last 50 km on rough dirt, only interesting if you combine Lake Naivasha or Nakuru en route.

Is the Masai Mara safe for travelers? +

Yes, the reserve and conservancies are among the most regulated safari destinations in Africa. Standard rules: follow instructions (don't leave the vehicle without the guide, don't approach wildlife on foot outside a supervised walking safari). Malaria: confirmed malaria zone, prophylaxis mandatory.

Do you need a visa for Kenya? +
