In brief

Nairobi in brief

  • 1

Apply for the Kenya eTA before boarding

Mandatory since January 2024, ~USD 32 (KES 5,500), valid 90 days. File online at etakenya.go.ke at least 3 days before your flight. No approved eTA, no boarding.

  • 2

Stay in Karen or Westlands, not downtown

Karen for the leafy residential calm near the park and the Blixen Museum, Westlands for restaurants and nightlife. The CBD is fine by day but skip walking it after dark.

  • 3

Combine Sheldrick Trust and Giraffe Centre in one morning

Sheldrick: single 11am-12pm public slot, 1,500 KES (~$10) plus Nairobi National Park entry $80. Giraffe Centre is 15 min away, 1,500 KES ($15 non-resident), open 9am-5pm.

  • 4

Book a morning game drive in Nairobi National Park

The world's only safari park inside a capital: rhinos, lions, giraffes against the skyline. Entry $80/day non-resident, 4x4 with guide $80-150, departure 6.30am.

  • 5

Uber and Bolt work everywhere in town

Far safer and cheaper than a street taxi (250-800 KES in town). Switch to cash mode if your foreign card is declined, or use M-Pesa once you have a local SIM.

FAQ

Nairobi FAQ

How many days to visit Nairobi? +
Two days cover the essentials: Nairobi National Park, Sheldrick Trust, Giraffe Centre, Karen Blixen Museum and a Westlands dinner. A third day lets you escape to the Rift Valley (Mount Longonot, Lake Naivasha). Most travelers use Nairobi as a stopover before a Masai Mara or Amboseli safari.
Is Nairobi safe for travelers? +
Moderate risk. Karen, Westlands, Lavington and Kilimani are safe day and night. The CBD is busy by day but needs caution after dark: no walking after sunset, no visible jewellery, bag close to your body. Always use Uber or Bolt rather than a street taxi. The airport is safe; book a transfer in advance for the first arrival.
Do you need a visa for Kenya? +
Yes for most non-East-African nationals: the eTA has been mandatory since January 2024, around USD 32 (KES 5,500), valid 90 days. Apply online at etakenya.go.ke at least 3 days before your flight. See our [Kenya eTA guide](/en/destinations/kenya/practical/visa-kenya/) for the full procedure.
What's the best neighborhood to stay in Nairobi? +
Karen for a calm, leafy stay close to the Giraffe Centre, Blixen Museum and Sheldrick Trust. Westlands for restaurants, bars and nightlife. Lavington or Kilimani for a residential middle ground. Skip the CBD for your first night.
How much does a game drive in Nairobi National Park cost? +
Park entry alone is USD 80 per adult non-resident in 2026. A 4x4 game drive with guide adds USD 80 to 150 depending on the operator, so USD 160 to 230 in total for a morning. Most hotels arrange a 6.30am departure with a return around 11am, ideal to chain with the Sheldrick visit.
How to combine Nairobi with the rest of Kenya? +
The classic loop: 2 days in Nairobi to acclimatize and tick off urban wildlife, an internal flight to the Masai Mara (45 min from Wilson Airport), 3-4 days of safari, back to Nairobi then a flight to the coast (Mombasa, Diani Beach, Lamu) or onward to Zanzibar for beach time. Allow 10 to 14 days for a complete Kenya trip.
