Our analysis
Madagascar comes down to a sharp split: the dry season, April to October, versus the wet season and its cyclones, November to April. The big island runs more than 1,500 km long, so regional nuances matter, but the basic calendar stays simple.
The dry season, April to October
This is the prime window. Tracks become passable again, skies clear and wildlife is active. June and July are the coolest months, down to 13ยฐC at night in the highlands: pack a fleece. It is also the season of the wildlife highlights: humpback whales hug Sainte-Marie from July to September, and lemurs are best seen in September-October, when many species give birth and the canopy thins.
The cyclone trap
From January to March, the east coast takes the peak of the rainy season. February and March concentrate the cyclone risk: heavy rain, cut-off roads, parks hard to reach. It is the time to avoid for a first trip. The southwest, sheltered by the highlands, stays the driest region and copes better year-round.
October, my favorite month
If I had to choose, I would aim for October. The dry season is winding down, wildlife is at its most visible, the purple jacarandas burst over the highlands and the rains are not yet here. A short but ideal window to combine parks, lemurs and a first taste of lazing on the coast.
