Adapt by season

Adapting the itinerary to the season

This itinerary stays on the west coast, dry from December to March. If rain settles in Langkawi (showers possible year-round), keep Kuala Lumpur and Penang but favor indoor activities: museums, street art, food tours. For guaranteed diving from April to October, swap Langkawi for the Perhentians on the east coast.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In January 2025, the 9am KL → Penang flight was on time and put me in Georgetown for lunch: on 7 days, every saved half-day counts.
  • Keep Penang for the food: a single food tour is enough to see why the island is Southeast Asia's food capital.
  • End with Langkawi: two relaxed beach nights handle the return fatigue better.

⚠️ Would change

  • On 7 days, skip the Cameron Highlands: the mountain detour would eat a whole day on the road.
  • Swap Langkawi for the Perhentians if you travel April to October and want diving.
  • Take the Penang → Langkawi flight rather than the ferry in rough seas.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Is one week in Malaysia enough? +
Yes for a focused first time: Kuala Lumpur plus two northern stops. Trying to add the Cameron Highlands or Borneo would lose days in transport.
Plane or bus to Penang? +
The plane. KL-Penang costs €35-50 and takes 1 h, versus 4-5 h of bus. On a week, the time saved is worth it.
Which airport for the return? +
Langkawi (LGK), with a short flight to Kuala Lumpur for the international connection. Most Europe flights leave from KLIA.
Is this itinerary family-friendly? +
Yes, one of the simplest: three stops, few transfers, calm beaches in Langkawi and a cable car children enjoy.
What's the best period? +
From December to March on the west coast: dry weather. Langkawi can see showers year-round, but they're brief.
How much does a week cost all in? +
Count around €1,000 backpacker, €1,300 comfort and €2,500 premium, flight from Paris included, per person.
