The essentials
When to go to Malaysia, in brief
It all depends on the coast
The two coasts run on different calendars. West (Langkawi, Penang): dry Dec-March. East (Perhentian, Tioman): dry March-September.
Northeast monsoon, Nov-February
Heavy rain on the east coast and east Borneo. Many east islands close and reopen in March. The time to avoid on that side.
Southwest monsoon, May-September
Quieter, but it brings showers to the west and Sabah. Skies often stay workable, with soft prices.
Borneo, March to October
The best window to see orangutans, pygmy elephants and proboscis monkeys: drier and wildlife easier to spot.
April-June, the heat peak
Up to 34ยฐC and high humidity in Kuala Lumpur. Air conditioning becomes a friend. Frequent evening storms.
Festivals to plan around
Thaipusam at Batu Caves (1 February) and the George Town Festival in Penang (1-9 August). Two highlights worth timing your trip for.

Our analysis
Malaysia is hot and humid all year, but the classic mistake is to treat it as one climate. Two opposing monsoons decide everything: the right time depends on the coast you are heading for.
Two coasts, two calendars
The west coast (Langkawi, Penang, Kuala Lumpur) is dry from December to March, while the northeast monsoon soaks the other side. This is the prime window for the western peninsula: 27 to 32ยฐC, clear skies, calm sea.
The east coast and its islands (Perhentian, Tioman, Redang) flip the calendar: they shine from March to September, then close from November to February under heavy rain. Booking an east island in December means risking a cancelled crossing and a closed resort.
Borneo and the heat peak
Borneo (Sabah, Sarawak) runs on its own logic: aim for March to October, drier, when orangutans, pygmy elephants and proboscis monkeys are easiest to spot. East Sabah floods from November to February.
My firm advice: if you want to combine it all in one trip, go in March. It is the only month when the west stays dry, the east islands reopen and Borneo enters its good season. Avoid April to June on the mainland, too hot and stormy in the cities.
