How to get around

Itinerary logistics

Over a month, you alternate speedboats between local islands, one domestic flight to Baa and above all a six-day liveaboard cruise, which gives access to the central-atoll dive sites unreachable from land. Every atoll change routes through Malé. Confirm each link the day before and keep a 24 h buffer before the return flight.

🛥️

6-day liveaboard cruise

€900-2,500 · up to 3 dives/day · central atolls

🚤

Shared inter-island speedboats

€30-55 · via the guesthouse · no ferry on Fridays

✈️

Domestic flight Malé → Baa

€120-180 · 20 min · for the northern hop

🛩️

Seaplane to the resort

€350-400 · aerial view · overwater finale

Adapt by season

A month to target both prime seasons

A month lets you straddle the seasons. The dry season (Dec-Apr) guarantees flat sea, a comfortable liveaboard cruise and reliable whale sharks in South Ari atoll. The southwest monsoon (May-Nov) opens manta-ray season at Hanifaru (Baa). Whatever the month, keep the cruise mid-trip (more stable weather than inter-island transfers) and a 24 h buffer before the return flight.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In January 2024 I slotted a six-day liveaboard into the middle of the month: waking each morning on a different dive site, with no transfer, after two weeks of local islands, is the ultimate Maldivian luxury and the best dives-per-day of the trip.
  • Five nights at Dhigurah for its 3 km sandbank: enough for whale shark, diving and real rest.
  • Finishing with two nights in an overwater resort: the contrast after a month of local islands makes all the pleasure.
  • Keeping a 24 h buffer in Malé before the flight: a weather-dependent transfer can shift the end.

⚠️ Would change

  • Time the cruise to the season: more stable sea in the dry season, more mantas at Baa in summer.
  • Skip Ukulhas if the budget is tight and keep the money for an extra resort night.
  • Book the liveaboard and South Ari guesthouses well ahead, supply is limited.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Isn't a month too much for islands in the Maldives? +
No, a month opens what no short trip allows: a multi-day liveaboard cruise on the best dive sites, plus time to vary the atolls (Kaafu, Vaavu, Ari, Baa) without rushing between transfers.
Is the liveaboard cruise worth it? +
Yes, it's the highlight of the month. The boat sleeps on the central-atoll dive sites, unreachable from the local islands, and offers up to three dives a day. It's the best way to see mantas, sharks and current channels.
How do you combine local islands, cruise and resort? +
The logical order: local islands first (immersion, gentle budget), cruise in the middle (intensive diving), overwater resort at the end (contrast and rest). All transit routes through Malé, allow a day per atoll change.
Is this itinerary good for experienced divers? +
It's the dream itinerary: the cruise gives access to the Ari and Vaavu thilas and current channels, Rasdhoo to hammerheads. An advanced certification and current experience are recommended for the best sites.
When should I go for this grand tour? +
December to April for flat sea, a comfortable cruise and reliable whale sharks. From May to November, the manta-ray season at Hanifaru offsets the monsoon. Time the cruise mid-trip, for steadier weather.
How much does a month in the Maldives cost all-in? +
Budget about €4,000 in a guesthouse + liveaboard mix, €5,500 in comfort and €11,000 premium, flight from Paris included, per person. The cruise and resort are the big lines.
