In brief

Malé in brief

  • 1

    A transit capital above all

Most travelers pass through Malé on the way to their resort. Half a day or one day is enough to see the essentials.

  • 2

One of the densest cities in the world

Over 200,000 people on a few square kilometers. Tightly packed towers, busy lanes, scooters everywhere.

  • 3

    Velana (MLE), the country's hub

The airport sits on a separate island, linked to the capital by ferry and to resorts by speedboat or seaplane.

  • 4

A Muslim island, proper dress required

No alcohol, shoulders and knees covered in town. Swimwear is reserved for designated beaches and resorts.

  • 5

    Everything is walkable

The historic center takes a few hours on foot. The market, mosques and waterfront are neighbors.

FAQ

Malé FAQ

Should you stay in Malé or go straight to a resort? +
Most travelers head straight to their resort or a local island. A night in Malé or Hulhumalé only makes sense if your flight arrives late or leaves early, or if you want to see the capital.
How long do you need to visit Malé? +
Half a day to one day is enough. The historic center (fish market, Old Friday Mosque, Grand Mosque, Sultan Park) is walkable in a few hours.
How do you reach the resorts from Malé airport? +
Depending on distance: speedboat for nearby atolls (30 min to 1h), seaplane for distant atolls (from Velana, 30 to 50 min). Transfers are arranged by your resort.
Can you drink alcohol and wear swimwear in Malé? +
No. Malé is a Muslim island: no alcohol in town and proper dress required. Swimwear is reserved for Rasfannu public beach (per posted rules) and resorts.
Do you need a visa for the Maldives? +
A free 30-day visa is granted on arrival for most nationalities, subject to conditions. See our Maldives visa guide.
