Adapt by season

November to April to chain it all

Over a month spanning highlands, the Pacific coast and the Caribbean, November to April remains the ideal window: dry everywhere, 22-26°C in the highlands, 28-32°C on the coasts. The rainy season (June-October) complicates the Chiapas roads and the Pacific. The Day of the Dead (late October, early November) in Oaxaca or Pátzcuaro is a cultural peak. Avoid sargassum on the Caribbean coast from April to August.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In late October 2023 I chained the Day of the Dead in Oaxaca then drove up the Pacific coast to Mazunte: going from the fervour of the altars to the turtle beaches in two days remains my best memory of this grand tour.
  • Keep 3 days in Holbox to end the trip gently, a car-free island.
  • Bacalar and its lagoon of seven colours, still spared from mass tourism.
  • Domestic flights for the big jumps, saving several bus days.
  • Mazunte and San Agustinillo over Puerto Escondido for the calm.

⚠️ Would change

  • Don't underestimate the Pacific → Chiapas transfer times, plan a flight.
  • Book Holbox and domestic flights weeks ahead in high season.
  • Avoid the rainy season (June-October) for Chiapas and the Pacific.
  • Leave a margin on the waterfall road to Palenque (5h, winding).

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Is a month necessary for this trip? +
Yes to link colonial highlands, the Pacific coast, Chiapas and the Yucatán without rushing, about 3,800 km and 11 stops. In 2 weeks, drop the Pacific coast and Guanajuato (see our 2-week format).
How many domestic flights are needed? +
Three are enough for the big jumps (Guanajuato-Oaxaca, Oaxaca-coast or coast-Chiapas, Palenque-Mérida). Expect €70-90 each on Volaris or Aeroméxico. The rest is by ADO bus and car.
When is the best time to go? +
November to April: dry everywhere. The Day of the Dead (late October, early November) in Oaxaca is a cultural highlight. Avoid the rainy season (June-October) which complicates Chiapas and the Pacific, and sargassum on the Caribbean coast from April to August.
Can this trip be done without a car? +
Largely yes: ADO buses between towns, domestic flights for the big jumps. A rental car is still useful in the Yucatán for cenotes. Holbox is reached by ferry.
Is Mexico safe for a long trip? +
The regions on this itinerary (centre, Oaxaca, Yucatán, Quintana Roo) are safe with the usual precautions. Touristy Chiapas is too. Avoid driving at night and follow per-state advisories.
Do I need a visa for a month-long stay? +
No for French citizens: no visa for tourist stays up to 180 days. Tourist card (FMM) issued on arrival, keep it until departure. Passport valid for the whole stay.
