How to get around

Itinerary logistics

The Yucatán suits a rental car well: flat roads, fast toll motorways, short distances. Expect ~450 km over the week. ADO buses are an excellent alternative between major towns if you'd rather not drive.

🚗

Rental car (Cancún)

€20-35/day · ideal for off-the-beaten cenotes

🛣️

180D toll motorway

Cancún-Mérida · fast · tolls ~€25 total

🚌

ADO bus

Comfortable and punctual · no-driving alternative

⛴️

Playa del Carmen-Cozumel ferry

45 min · ~€20 return · renowned dive reefs

Adapt by season

Dry season from November to April

The Yucatán is at its best from November to April: clear skies, calm sea, 28-30°C. From May to October it's hotter and humid, with a hurricane risk from June to November (peak in September). Sargassum (brown seaweed) often invades the Riviera Maya beaches from April to August: if you come for swimming, favour winter or fall back on the cenotes and Holbox.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In January 2025 I reached Chichén Itzá at opening (8am): the Kukulcán pyramid alone in the morning light, while by 11am the Cancún buses were unloading hundreds of visitors. Sleep in Valladolid, not Cancún, to get there early.
  • Choose Valladolid as a base rather than Cancún's hotel zone, more genuine and central.
  • Cenote Suytun early for the light beam without the crowd.
  • Try cochinita pibil at Valladolid's market.
  • The Tulum site at opening, before the midday heat.

⚠️ Would change

  • Avoid sleeping in Cancún's hotel zone, expensive and charmless.
  • Check sargassum conditions before booking a beach (April-August).
  • Don't chain too many cenotes in one day, you tire of them.
  • Book Sian Ka'an ahead, guided-tour spots are limited.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Is one week enough for the Yucatán? +
Yes for the essentials: Chichén Itzá, Valladolid, Tulum, cenotes and the Caribbean coast, over ~450 km. To add Mérida, Bacalar or Holbox, plan 10-14 days.
Should I rent a car in Mexico? +
Recommended for the Yucatán: cenotes and villages are poorly served by transport. Roads are good and flat. Otherwise, ADO buses connect the major towns very well, comfortably and on time.
Do cenotes charge entry? +
Yes, entry costs €5-15 depending on the site. The famous ones (Ik Kil, Suytun, Gran Cenote) are developed. Many wilder, cheaper cenotes lie around Valladolid.
When is the best time to go? +
November to April: dry, 28-30°C, calm sea. May to October hotter and humid, with hurricane season (peak in September) and sargassum on the beaches from April to August.
Is the Yucatán safe? +
It's one of Mexico's safest regions for travellers. Usual precautions are enough: avoid driving at night, keep valuables discreet. Quintana Roo and Yucatán state are low-risk.
Do I need a visa for Mexico? +
No for French citizens: no visa for tourist stays up to 180 days. You receive a tourist card (FMM) on arrival. Passport valid for the whole stay required.
