Adapt by season

Toubkal in spring, desert outside summer

This month includes the Toubkal trek (4,167 m) in the High Atlas: doable April to October, snow-covered summit in winter (crampons needed November to March). The Merzouga desert and the Draa valley are perfect October to May but scorching in summer. The ideal window is April-May: Toubkal accessible, desert still cool, mild coast. In autumn (September-October), the summit stays doable and the cities breathe.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In May 2024 I started the Toubkal climb at 5am from the refuge, head-torch on: the 4,167 m summit reached by 9am, the Atlas in every direction and no one. The groups that left at 7am arrived in full sun. A pre-dawn start is the only way to have the summit to yourself.
  • Adding the Draa valley and Zagora: the longest palm grove in the country, often skipped by short trips.
  • Four days in Essaouira to truly unwind at the end of the month, facing the ocean.
  • Slotting Toubkal early in the trip, while still fresh and acclimatised to Marrakech's altitude.

⚠️ Would change

  • Not attempting Toubkal in winter without crampons or a guide: snow-covered summit November to March.
  • Sharing the driving on the long southern legs (Draa, Merzouga-Fes).
  • Keeping some slack on the trek: shift it by a day depending on the Atlas weather.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Is a month too long for Morocco? +
Not if you add the Toubkal trek and the deep south (Draa valley). Two weeks already cover desert, cities and coast; the month adds high mountains and more rest days in Essaouira and Chefchaouen.
Is the Toubkal trek accessible? +
Yes with good fitness: 4,167 m, two days, about 1,000 m of climb on summit day. A mountain guide is recommended. Doable April to October; crampons essential in winter.
Do you need a car for the whole month? +
Yes except for the trek (on foot) and the camel ride. The same vehicle serves the south, the desert, the north and the coast. The ONCF train can replace the car between imperial cities.
What currency and what budget? +
The dirham (MAD), about 11 MAD to €1. Budget €2,600 backpacking, €3,400 in comfort, €6,800 premium, flight included, per person. The driver and desert camp are the heaviest lines.
What is the best time to go? +
April-May and September-October: Toubkal accessible, desert still cool, breathable cities, mild coast. Summer too hot inland, snow-covered summit in winter.
Can you do this month without hiking? +
Yes: replace Toubkal with more time in Marrakech or a detour via Agadir and Taroudant. But the trek is the highlight of the 1-month version.
