Shorter, longer
1 week
The Marrakech, desert and Fes loop. The essential format.
2 weeks
The whole south, plus the Atlantic coast and Chefchaouen.
1 month
The grand tour: Sahara, Atlas, coast and imperial cities.
How to get around
A one-week loop from Marrakech to Fes via the desert. Most travellers take a car with driver or a 4-day tour: distances are long (470 km Merzouga-Fes) and the passes many.
Car + driver
€60-90/day · the simplest · driver knows the passes
Camel ride at Merzouga
included in the camp · 1 h round trip to the dunes
Tichka pass
2,260 m · 2 h of bends · pack for travel sickness
Petit taxi in town
€2-5 a ride · meter or price agreed beforehand
Adapt by season
This itinerary goes through the Merzouga desert, pleasant from March to May and October to November. In summer the imperial cities top 40°C and the sand is unbearable at noon; in winter, nights at camp drop below 0°C. Spring stays ideal: mild days, bearable nights under canvas. In mid-winter, add a good fleece and a sleeping bag for the bivouac.
