How to get around

Itinerary logistics

A one-week loop from Marrakech to Fes via the desert. Most travellers take a car with driver or a 4-day tour: distances are long (470 km Merzouga-Fes) and the passes many.

Adapt by season

Desert freezing in winter, scorching in summer

This itinerary goes through the Merzouga desert, pleasant from March to May and October to November. In summer the imperial cities top 40°C and the sand is unbearable at noon; in winter, nights at camp drop below 0°C. Spring stays ideal: mild days, bearable nights under canvas. In mid-winter, add a good fleece and a sleeping bag for the bivouac.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In October 2024 I climbed the dune at sunrise in Merzouga, at 6.30am: the sand still cold, the light low, and no one around. An hour later the quad bikes had taken over the erg. Daybreak is the only calm moment.
  • Sleeping facing the ksar of Ait Benhaddou rather than in Ouarzazate: lit up at sunset.
  • Taking a car with driver: they know the passes, the photo stops and the good roadside restaurants.
  • The bivouac in the Erg Chebbi, with dinner and gnawa music under the stars.

⚠️ Would change

  • Not doing Merzouga-Fes in a single day if you cope poorly with the road: break it at Midelt.
  • Avoiding July-August: 40°C in town, unbearable sand at noon.
  • Booking the Fes riad ahead: the medina is a maze, arrange a meet.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Is a week enough for Morocco? +
Yes for the classic Marrakech, desert and Fes loop. It is intense but doable. To add the Atlantic coast (Essaouira) and Chefchaouen, you need two weeks.
Do you need a car or a driver? +
A private driver is the most comfortable option (€60-90/day): they know the passes and distances. Self-drive is possible but tiring on the long legs. Shared 4-day tours remain the cheapest.
Do you need a visa for Morocco? +
No for French, Belgian, Swiss and Canadian nationals: free stay up to 90 days with a valid passport. No visa needed.
What is the best time to go? +
March-May and October-November: mild days, a pleasant desert, bearable nights. Summer too hot (40°C in town), mid-winter freezing at night at camp.
How much does this week cost? +
Around €800 backpacking, €1,100 in comfort and €2,400 premium, flight from Paris included, per person. The driver and desert camp are the heaviest lines.
