In brief

Fes in brief

  • 1

9,000 lanes, take a guide on day one

The medina of Fes el-Bali is the largest pedestrian zone in the world. 200 to 400 MAD for an official guide on 3 to 4 hours, official badge required.

  • 2

    Visit Chouara in the morning

Brightest colors between 10:30am and 1pm. Strong smell, accept the offered mint. View from leather-shop terraces, 20 MAD max as a tip.

  • 3

Bou Inania Madrasa: zellige and carved cedar

The Marinid masterpiece of the 14th century, 20 MAD entry. Fes's only religious building open to non-Muslims, not to miss.

  • 4

Sleep in a riad at the heart of Fes el-Bali

To live the medina at dawn and nightfall. Refined comfort behind blank walls. From โ‚ฌ50/night.

  • 5

Watch out for fake guides at the gates

Around Bab Boujloud, politely decline. Never follow someone offering a shortcut. Always agree the price before any service.

FAQ

Fes FAQ

Do you need a guide in Fes? +
Yes for the first half-day: the medina has over 9,000 lanes and it's easy to get lost. An official guide licensed by the Ministry of Tourism (plastic badge) costs 200-400 MAD for 3-4 hours. Book through your riad or the tourist office, never through a street tout.
How many days to visit Fes? +
Two full days cover the medina, the Chouara Tannery, Bou Inania, the Mellah and a hammam. A third day allows a trip to Volubilis, Meknรจs or Chefchaouen. Three days is ideal not to rush.
Is the Chouara Tannery free? +
Yes, you view it from the leather-shop terraces overlooking the vats. Tip 10 to 20 MAD to the shopkeeper who opens the access. Refuse to pay more and don't feel obliged to buy on the way out.
When should you visit Chouara for the best colors? +
In the morning between 10:30am and 1pm: workers are actively dyeing, colors are vivid. The smell is more bearable in winter and spring than in summer.
Is Fes safe for travelers? +
Yes overall. Main risks are fake guides at the gates (Bab Boujloud, Bab R'cif), pickpockets in the crowd and a few taxi scams. Stay in the medina, walk confidently, politely decline spontaneous guides.
Do you need a visa for Fes? +
No for French and EU nationals: 90 days visa-free with a passport valid six months after entry. See our [Morocco visa guide](/en/destinations/morocco/practical/visa-morocco/) for other nationalities.
