Adapt by season

A southern summer for the grand tour

Over 30 days and both islands, the southern summer (December to February) is ideal: long days, all trails open, ferry and glaciers accessible. It is high season, so book vehicle and lodging early. Autumn (March-May) offers splendid colours and fewer people. In winter (June-August), the west coast stays passable but the southern alpine passes sometimes close under snow. Aim for November to April.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In February 2025, I did the Tongariro Alpine Crossing on the 6:30am start: 19 km through steaming craters and emerald lakes, with the Lord of the Rings volcanic peak as a backdrop. Leaving early beats the 9am crowd and gets you finished before the afternoon wind. The best walking day of the trip.
  • Combining the North Island volcanoes, the west coast glaciers and the southern fjords: three worlds.
  • Taking time for the wild west coast: Punakaiki, Franz Josef, Lake Matheson.
  • Queenstown as a large 6-night base to radiate over Fiordland and the Alps.
  • The morning ferry to cross the Marlborough Sounds in golden light.

⚠️ Would change

  • Skip the Bay of Islands (3 days) if you would rather have more time in the south.
  • Add the Coromandel Peninsula (Cathedral Cove) in the north if you have 3 days.
  • Book the ferry and van months ahead in the southern summer, they fill up.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Is a month necessary for New Zealand? +
For a grand tour of both islands, yes: Bay of Islands, Rotorua, Wellington in the north, then Abel Tasman, the glaciers, Queenstown and Fiordland in the south. A month lets you take time for the hikes and fjords without rushing.
Does the inter-island ferry take vans? +
Yes: the Wellington-Picton ferry (Interislander or Bluebridge) carries cars and vans. Book early in summer, especially for large campervans. The Marlborough Sounds crossing takes 3h30.
Do you need a van or a car for a month? +
The van/campervan is ideal over 30 days: total freedom and lodging savings. A car suits you if you prefer lodges. Left-hand driving, winding alpine roads, plan realistic drives.
What budget for 1 month in New Zealand? +
Budget €4,800 backpacking (van) and €5,800 in comfort per person, flight from Europe included. The international flight, fuel over 4,500 km, the ferry and glacier flights weigh on the budget.
What is the best time? +
December to April: southern summer (Dec-Feb) for long days and all trails open, autumn (March-April) for colours and fewer people. Winter sometimes closes the southern alpine passes.
Do you need a visa for New Zealand? +
Yes: an NZeTA authorisation is required for most Western travellers, applied for online before departure (with an IVL levy). Tourist stays up to 3 months, enough for 30 days. Passport valid for 3 months after return.
