How to get around
New Zealand is best discovered by road trip. Over 7 days, the South Island is covered by rental car or van over ~1,500 km, driving on the left. The roads are beautiful but winding, so plan realistic drive times. Budget ~€250 to €350 for rental and fuel.

Adapt by season
New Zealand is in the southern hemisphere: summer (December to February) is high season, with long days and open trails, but crowds and high prices. Autumn (March to May) brings spectacular colours around Queenstown and fewer people. In winter (June-August), snow closes some mountain passes (Crown Range) and shortens the days, but opens the ski fields. For this South Island road trip, aim for November to April.
