How to get around

Itinerary logistics

A month adds the Hebrides (Islay, Mull, Lewis & Harris) to the grand tour. Lots of CalMac ferries to book early, then the car for the NC500 and the national parks.

⛴️

CalMac ferries to the islands

€15-30/crossing · book months ahead in summer

🚗

Car for the whole month

€60-70/day · driving on the left, single-track roads

🚆

Train Edinburgh → Glasgow

€10-15 · 50 min · before picking up the car

🥃

Islay and Speyside distilleries

€12-25 per tour · take-home sample for the driver

Adapt by season

Island ferries and the midge-free window

A month leans on lots of ferries to the Hebrides: book CalMac months ahead in summer (May-September), the only window when every crossing runs at full frequency. The ideal slot stays May-June and September: few midges, long days, clear island roads. In winter ferries thin out and several NC500 sections become risky.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In June 2024 I booked the CalMac Uig-Tarbert ferry back in February: it was full for cars by April. Without a booking you're left on the quay. The Hebrides ferries are the real bottleneck of a month in Scotland.
  • Three full days on Islay for the peated distilleries: no rushing between Laphroaig and Ardbeg.
  • The Luskentyre beaches on Harris in the sun: tropical-grade turquoise, with nobody there.
  • Keeping the Cairngorms for the end: gentle nature after the intensity of the NC500.

⚠️ Would change

  • Book Islay, Mull and Lewis & Harris together the moment you buy the flights.
  • Skip an island (Mull, say) if time is tight, and beef up Skye or the NC500.
  • Over a month, don't underestimate left-side driving fatigue: swap drivers.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Is a month too much for Scotland? +
No, especially if you add the Hebrides. Islay, Mull and Lewis & Harris each need 3 to 4 days, ferries included. A month lets you combine the islands, the NC500 and the parks without rushing.
Do I need to book ferries in advance? +
Yes, essential in summer. CalMac ferries to Islay, Mull and the Outer Hebrides show full for cars months ahead. It's the first thing to lock in.
When is the best time? +
May-June and September: few midges, long days, all ferry crossings running. July-August are stunning but jammed on the islands and narrow roads.
Which island to choose if you must cut one? +
Keep Skye (essential) and Lewis & Harris (beaches and Callanish stones). Islay is for peated-whisky fans, Mull for wildlife lovers (eagles, puffins, whales).
Is left-side driving hard over a month? +
You get used to it in two days. The real challenge stays the single-track roads of the islands and the NC500: you pull in at passing places. Swapping drivers helps over the long haul.
How much does this month cost all in? +
About €3,800 backpacking, €5,000 in comfort and €9,500 premium, return flight from Paris included, per person. Ferries and long-term rental weigh most.
