How to get around

Itinerary logistics

This itinerary combines Skye and the North Coast 500, the 830 km loop around the north from Inverness. It's all by car: there is no public transport on the NC500.

🚗

Car on the NC500

€60-70/day · single-track roads · respect the passing places

⛰️

Bealach na Bà pass

626 m · 18 km of hairpins · avoid in bad weather

⛴️

Cape Wrath ferry-minibus

€20 · the only access to the lighthouse · weather and tide dependent

🥃

Speyside distilleries

€12-25 per tour · the driver doesn't taste, take a sample home

Adapt by season

Dry NC500, midges under control

The North Coast 500 is best May to September, with open roads and long days. The trap: its single-track roads clog in July-August, peak domestic season, and midges bite in the damp west (Applecross, Torridon). May-June and September offer the best compromise: little crowding, few midges, plenty of light. In winter several sections become risky under snow.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In May 2025 I drove Bealach na Bà at 8am: the single-track road was mine alone, while at noon I met a car every 200 m, forced reversing included. On the NC500, starting early changes everything.
  • Three full days on Skye before the NC500: you tackle the big loop rested.
  • Sleeping at Applecross rather than pressing on: the Applecross Inn at sunset is worth the stop.
  • Driving the NC500 anticlockwise (Skye first) to finish with whisky and Loch Ness.

⚠️ Would change

  • Book all NC500 B&Bs months ahead in summer: lodging fills up fast.
  • Skip John o'Groats (overrated) in favour of Dunnet Head, the real northernmost point.
  • Add a night at Torridon to hike if you love the mountains.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

What is the North Coast 500? +
A scenic loop of ~830 km around the north of Scotland, starting from Inverness. It follows the wild west coast, the far north, and comes back down the east. Allow 5 to 7 days to enjoy it, more if you add Skye.
Do I need a car the whole way? +
Yes, essential. No public transport serves the NC500. Mind the single-track roads with passing places: you pull in to let others by.
When is the best time? +
May-June and September: long days, little crowding, few midges. July-August are stunning but jammed on the narrow roads.
Is the Bealach na Bà pass hard? +
It's the steepest road in the country (626 m, tight hairpins). Doable by anyone in good weather, best avoided in fog or with a big caravan. A coastal alternative bypasses the pass.
Can I taste whisky while driving? +
No, the Scottish alcohol limit is very low. Distilleries offer a take-home sample (driver's dram) for the driver. Otherwise bring a non-driving taster.
How much does this trip cost all in? +
About €2,000 backpacking, €2,600 in comfort and €5,200 premium, return flight from Paris included, per person.
