How to get around
This itinerary combines Skye and the North Coast 500, the 830 km loop around the north from Inverness. It's all by car: there is no public transport on the NC500.
Car on the NC500
€60-70/day · single-track roads · respect the passing places
Bealach na Bà pass
626 m · 18 km of hairpins · avoid in bad weather
Cape Wrath ferry-minibus
€20 · the only access to the lighthouse · weather and tide dependent
Speyside distilleries
€12-25 per tour · the driver doesn't taste, take a sample home
Adapt by season
The North Coast 500 is best May to September, with open roads and long days. The trap: its single-track roads clog in July-August, peak domestic season, and midges bite in the damp west (Applecross, Torridon). May-June and September offer the best compromise: little crowding, few midges, plenty of light. In winter several sections become risky under snow.
