Thailand's largest island on the Andaman Sea, Phuket lines up turquoise beaches, a Sino-Portuguese Old Town, the Big Buddha and trips to Phi Phi. Here's how to enjoy it in 3 days, beyond Patong alone.

In brief
An island, not just a beach
Phuket is 50 km long. Patong concentrates mass tourism, but the south and east stay calm. Pick your beach to match your pace.
Patong is the buzz, not authenticity
Bangla Road, bars, neon and crowds. Great for one night, tiring for longer. Kata, Karon or Nai Harn to breathe.
Dry season from November to April
Calm sea, clear skies. From May to October the monsoon stirs up the sea (red flags), but hotels drop up to 40%.
No public transport, inflated prices
Taxis and Grab are pricey and sometimes scarce. Scooters are common but accidents are frequent: helmet, license, caution.
The day trips are worth it
Phi Phi, James Bond Island, the Similans: Phuket is often the launch point to explore the Andaman Sea.
Must-see
The liveliest beach. Watersports by day, neon and bars at night. Crowded but worth seeing once.
Sino-Portuguese architecture, colorful facades, cafes and street art. The most photogenic Phuket.
45m white marble statue on Nakkerd Hill. 360ยฐ view over the south of the island.
The island's most revered temple. Gilded chedi, frescoes, a reverent atmosphere.
The island's southern tip. Phuket's sunset spot, very busy late in the day.
Long pale-sand beaches, more relaxed than Patong. Families, beginner surf in monsoon.
White-sand cove reached by boat or a steep trail. Turquoise water, fewer crowds.
Lookout over Kata Noi, Kata and Karon lined up. A classic stop on the southern coast road.
Chicer, quieter west coast. Resorts, beach restaurants, relaxed vibe.
Every Sunday evening Thalang Road closes to cars: street food, crafts, music.

Local
Getting around
Scooter
The most common way to explore the island. Helmet and license required. Hilly roads, frequent accidents: be careful.
Grab / taxi
Convenient but pricey and not always available. Use the Grab app for a fixed price and to avoid haggling.
Songthaew (local bus)
Shared blue pickups, mainly between Phuket Town and the beaches. Slow and infrequent in the evening.
Rental car
Useful if you want to see the whole south and east. Left-hand driving, easy parking outside Patong.
