Adapt by season

Spring to do it all without suffering the heat

A month crosses every Tunisia: the green north, the coastal Sahel, the Sahara, the islands. From March to May everything is open and temperate (20 to 30 °C), and the almond and orange trees of Cap Bon are in bloom. Autumn (September to November) also works very well, with a still-warm sea. Avoid July-August for the south (over 40 °C) and winter for the north (rainy), though Djerba and the desert stay workable in winter sun.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In May 2025 I gave Djerba 5 days at the end of the loop: after three weeks of roads and sites, those beach-and-hammam days were the best wind-down before the flight home.
  • Keep the green north (Bizerte, Tabarka, Ain Draham) at the start: few travellers do it, and it is the wooded, cool Tunisia no one pictures.
  • The detour to Kerkennah, flat and silent islands, off every classic circuit.
  • Sleep under canvas at Douz, sunrise over the Grand Erg.
  • Take the car by the month rather than by the day: clear savings over 30 days.

⚠️ Would change

  • Cut Cap Bon to 2 days if you prefer the south, and add a night in Tozeur.
  • Skip Kerkennah if time is short and keep those days for Djerba.
  • Do not chain Douz and Djerba in the same day: the Matmata road deserves a stop.
  • In summer, move the south (Tozeur, Douz) to the start, before the July heat.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Is a month too long for Tunisia? +
No if you want to see it all without rushing: the green north, Cap Bon, the Sahel, the Sahara, Djerba and the Kerkennah islands. A month also allows real rest days between the cultural legs.
Do I need a car for the whole loop? +
Yes, it is the most practical option over 30 days. A monthly rental (~€1,000) is far cheaper than daily and unlocks the north-west and south, poorly served by public transport.
When is the best time? +
March to May and September to November to cross every climate comfortably. Avoid July-August for the south (over 40 °C) and winter for the rainier north.
Do I need a visa? +
No for French and EU citizens: tourist stays up to 90 days visa-free with a valid passport. Beyond that, request an extension locally.
What budget for a month? +
Allow €1,800 to €3,000 per person including flights at comfort level, car included. Tunisia remains one of the cheapest destinations in the Mediterranean basin.
Is the loop safe from north to south? +
The tourist areas are safe and busy. Check official travel advice for the border regions with Libya and Algeria, which are not recommended and are not part of this itinerary.
