Adapt by season

Avoid the south in high summer

This short route heads for the desert from day 4. From March to May and September to November, Tozeur and Douz stay pleasant by day (25 to 32 °C). In July-August the heat tops 40 °C in the afternoon in the south: pack the desert programme into the early morning, or swap the Saharan loop for two beach nights in Hammamet if you travel in summer.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In October 2024 I took the camel ride at 7am instead of the afternoon: pink sky, cool dunes, not a single other tourist. The desert at sunrise changes everything.
  • Take the Tozeur-Tunis flight on the way back rather than 6h of driving: the week is too short to lose a full day on the road.
  • The 4x4 to Chebika and Tamerza, the highlight of Tozeur.
  • Sleep one night in a tent at Douz, starry sky guaranteed.

⚠️ Would change

  • In summer, swap the southern loop for two beach nights in Hammamet.
  • If culture is enough, stick to Tunis-Sousse-El Jem and skip the desert.
  • Add Kairouan between El Jem and Tozeur if your day-7 flight is late.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Is one week enough for Tunisia? +
Yes for a first taste: Tunis and its Roman sites, the El Jem amphitheatre and a Sahara taster fit into 7 days. To add Djerba and the coast without rushing, allow 2 weeks.
Do I need a rental car? +
On the coast (Tunis-Sousse-El Jem), train and shared taxi are enough. For the southern loop (Tozeur, Douz), a car or organised transfer is recommended.
When is the best time? +
March to May and September to November. Summer is very hot in the south (over 40 °C). Winter stays mild on the coast but cold at night in the desert.
Do I need a visa? +
No for French and EU citizens: tourist stays up to 90 days visa-free with a valid passport.
What budget should I plan? +
Allow €600 to €1,000 per person including flights for 7 days. A local meal costs €8 to €15, a boutique dar €40 to €60 a night.
Is the desert safe independently? +
The tourist areas of Tozeur and Douz are safe and well marked. Camel rides and 4x4 trips run with local guides. Avoid isolated tracks without a guide.
