Our analysis
Uzbekistan runs on two windows: spring and autumn. In between, summer turns the desert into an oven and winter empties the cities. Timing your dates changes everything, especially the light on Samarkand’s turquoise domes.
Spring and autumn, the two prime seasons
From April to June, the country shakes off winter: 20 to 30°C, dry skies, deserts and pastures carpeted with flowers. It is the mildest stretch to combine Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva without suffering the heat.
From September to October, the air cools (14 to 28°C) and turns even drier. This is harvest season: markets overflow with melons, grapes and pomegranates. For photography, autumn often wins, with golden light late in the day.
The desert summer and the clear winter
From July to August, the Kyzylkum climbs to 37-40°C. The air stays dry, but midday visits become an ordeal. You set out at dawn and retreat into the shade in the afternoon.
Winter drops below 5°C, often freezing at night. The cold deters most travelers, and that is precisely the appeal: deserted monuments, blue skies and slashed prices. Worth considering if crowds bother you more than the chill.
