The essentials
When to go to Argentina, in brief
October to April: the austral summer
The prime window. Patagonia accessible, long days, jacarandas in Buenos Aires. December-February are the hottest, and busiest.
Patagonia in high summer
El Calafate, El Chaltén and Ushuaia are at their best December to February: 8-18°C, open trails, but strong wind. Autumn (March-April) is calmer.
Buenos Aires in spring
October-November: ideal temperatures (20-25°C) and purple jacarandas everywhere. March-May, the mild autumn, is just as pleasant.
Iguazú in the off-season
The falls are most powerful from April to September (winter), when it is less hot and humid. Summer is muggy but the cascades stay spectacular.
Mendoza and the harvest
February-March for the grape harvest and the Fiesta de la Vendimia. The Malbec vineyards under the sun, at the foot of the Andes.
June to August: the austral winter
Cold and skiing in the Andes (Bariloche). Patagonia largely closes: many lodges and excursions shut down.
The verdict
The best periods
October - April
Austral summer: Patagonia open, mild cities, North walkable. December-February for pure Patagonia, October-November and March for the rest.
April - June
Austral autumn: colors in Patagonia, crowds easing, Iguazú at its best. Cooler, but a fine off-season window.
June - August (Patagonia)
Austral winter: Patagonia largely closes, biting cold in the south. Good for Andean skiing, not for Patagonia treks.

The key events of the year
Fiesta Nacional de la Vendimia
The great harvest festival in Mendoza: parades, queen election, night show at the foot of the Andes. The heart of Malbec country.
🇦🇷 Mendoza
Buenos Aires Tango Festival
Two weeks of concerts, milongas and the world tango championship. In the austral winter, but the capital's cultural highlight.

Penguins and whales (Valdés Peninsula)
Southern right whales September to November, Magellanic penguin colonies October to March. One of the country's great wildlife highlights.
🇦🇷 Valdés Peninsula
Carnival
Colorful parades, notably in Gualeguaychú (the country's largest) and the Andean Northwest, with stronger Indigenous accents.
🇦🇷 Gualeguaychú, Salta
Our analysis
Argentina stretches 3,700 kilometers from the subtropical north to subantarctic Patagonia, so there is not one but several best times. The general rule still holds: the austral summer, October to April, opens the most doors. As this is the southern hemisphere, the seasons are reversed.
The austral summer, October to April
This is the prime window. Patagonia becomes accessible (8 to 18°C), Buenos Aires fills with purple jacarandas and the days lengthen. December to February are the hottest and busiest, especially for Patagonia treks: book El Chaltén and El Calafate months ahead. In Mendoza, February-March means harvest and the Fiesta de la Vendimia, at the foot of the Andes.
Calendars that cross
Argentina rewards travelers who think by region. Buenos Aires is at its mildest in spring (October-November) and autumn (March-May), not in humid high summer. Iguazú Falls, by contrast, are at their best in winter (April-September), when the air is less muggy. The Valdés Peninsula strings together whales (September-November) and penguins (October-March), a wildlife date to align with the austral summer.
The Patagonian winter trap
From June to August, the south shuts down: most Patagonia lodging and excursions close, and the cold bites. It is, however, the Andean ski season at Bariloche and the best time for Iguazú. A blunt opinion: never plan a Patagonia trek in austral winter, you will find closed doors. Book December-February instead, or March for the colors and the calm.
