FAQ

Sydney FAQ

How many days do you need in Sydney? +
Three days cover the harbour icons, a ferry return to Manly and the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk. A fourth day fits a Blue Mountains trip or an extra beach day. With a week, combine Sydney with the Hunter Valley or a hop to Byron Bay.
What's the best area to stay in Sydney? +
The Rocks and Circular Quay for a first visit: Opera House, bridge and ferries on foot, but it's the most expensive pocket. Surry Hills for cafรฉs and restaurants at gentler prices. Bondi or Manly for a beach-focused stay, accepting 30 to 40 minutes into the centre.
Can you visit the Sydney Opera House for free? +
The exterior, forecourts and foyer are free to explore. To get inside the theatres you need either the guided tour (A$48, 1 hour) or a performance ticket, often from A$40-60 for some shows. Book at sydneyoperahouse.com.
Is BridgeClimb worth the price? +
The climb is spectacular but expensive (from around A$300 depending on the slot, more at dawn and twilight). Budget alternative: walk across the bridge for free on the eastern footpath, or go up the Pylon Lookout for an already superb view at a fraction of the price.
Are Sydney's beaches safe for swimming? +
Yes, as long as you swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches (Bondi, Manly and Coogee are patrolled all season). The real hazard is rip currents, not sharks. Rock-carved ocean pools such as Bondi Icebergs or Bronte Baths offer a wave-free option.
When can you see whales in Sydney? +
From May to November, during the humpback migration along the coast. The clifftops at South Head, North Head and The Gap are free vantage points. Dedicated cruises leave from Circular Quay and Darling Harbour, roughly A$50-90 for 2 to 3 hours.
Do you need a visa for Sydney? +
Most European passport holders apply for the free eVisitor (subclass 651) online: stays of up to 3 months within 12 months. The AustralianETA app (A$20) covers other nationalities, including Canadians and Americans. See our [Australia visa guide](/en/destinations/australia/practical/visa-australia/).
