How to get around

Itinerary logistics

Over 30 days, this grand tour is done entirely by rental car. Count ~€550 of rental and fuel. The southwest (Barahona, Pedernales) has rougher roads: fill up often, stations get sparse. Bahía de las Águilas is reached by boat from Las Cuevas.

Adapt by season

Adapt the southwest to the season

This grand tour adds the arid southwest (Barahona, Pedernales), drier than the rest of the island. From December to April, ideal conditions everywhere, 27 to 31°C, and whales in Samaná from mid-January to late March. From June to November, the August-September hurricane peak mainly threatens the north and east coasts. In summer, keep the better-sheltered southwest and center, and shorten the north coast.

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In January 2025, the 8am boat to Bahía de las Águilas from Las Cuevas dropped me alone on 8 km of white sand, inside Jaragua park. By noon, three boats had arrived. Go early: it's the finest beach in the country and no one knows yet.
  • Five nights in Barahona: the arid southwest, its natural pools and Lake Enriquillo are worth lingering for.
  • Keeping the southwest for the end: after two classic weeks, this coastal-desert landscape surprises.
  • Doing Jarabacoa between the north coast and the south: the mountain break breaks the beach routine.
  • Booking the Barahona eco-lodge ahead: quality stays there are rare.

⚠️ Would change

  • Cut Punta Cana to 2 days if the touristy east coast doesn't draw you.
  • Add Constanza (alpine valley) one more night if you love altitude.
  • Take a 4x4 for the southwest: the Pedernales tracks punish a city car.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Is a month necessary for this grand tour? +
Yes to include the wild southwest (Barahona, Pedernales, Bahía de las Águilas), 6h from the capital and often skipped by classic tours. Under 3 weeks, you have to drop it.
Do you need a 4x4 for the southwest? +
Recommended: the roads to Pedernales, the Hoyo de Pelempito and Cabo Rojo include tracks. A city car gets through in the dry season but struggles. Bahía de las Águilas is reached by boat anyway.
Is Bahía de las Águilas worth the 6h detour? +
Yes: it's the finest beach in the country, 8 km of deserted white sand in Jaragua park, reached by boat. Go early in the morning to have it almost to yourself.
Do you need a visa for 30 days? +
No for most travelers: the visa-free tourist stay runs to 30 days, just enough. A free electronic boarding card (e-Ticket) must be filled in before arrival and departure.
What's the best period for this grand tour? +
December to April: ideal conditions everywhere, 27 to 31°C, and whales in Samaná. The arid southwest stays dry almost year-round. Avoid August-September, hurricane peak on the north and east coasts.
How much fuel for 30 days? +
Count about €250 to €300 of fuel for ~2,000 km. In the southwest, gas stations get sparse: fill up before Pedernales, Lake Enriquillo and Cabo Rojo.
