How to get around

Itinerary logistics

The loop is done by rental car over 14 days. Count ~€300 of fuel and rental excluding excursions. The highways (DR-1, DR-7) are good; the climb to Jarabacoa calls for care on the bends.

Adapt by season

North coast and whales depending on the month

This loop runs along the north coast (Cabarete, Puerto Plata), more exposed to swells. From December to April, the sea is workable at 27 to 30°C, and it's also whale season in Samaná (mid-January to late March). From June to November, hurricane season peaks in August-September, when the north coast is most at risk. In summer, favor the south and center, better sheltered.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In March 2025 I climbed up to Jarabacoa after two weeks of beach: 600 m altitude, cool air, coffee farms and rafting on the Yaque del Norte. No one pictures that contrast on a Caribbean island. Definitely a keeper.
  • Combining Cabarete and Puerto Plata on the north coast: kitesurf, 27 waterfalls and cable car in two days.
  • Los Haitises from Las Terrenas rather than from Sabana de la Mar: fewer crowds, superb mangroves.
  • Two nights in Bayahibe to do Saona and the East park without rushing.
  • Finishing in the mountains: the beach-then-altitude transition balances the trip well.

⚠️ Would change

  • Skip Jarabacoa if you'd rather extend the north coast (surf in Cabarete).
  • Add Punta Cana at the start or end if you want a classic resort/beach day.
  • Avoid night driving in the Cordillera: tight bends and frequent fog.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Do you need a visa for the Dominican Republic? +
No for most travelers up to a 30-day tourist stay. A free electronic boarding card (e-Ticket) must be filled in before arrival and departure. Passport valid for the duration of the stay.
Are two weeks enough to loop the island? +
Yes for a balanced loop: south coast, Samaná peninsula, north coast and central mountains. To add the wild southwest (Barahona, Pedernales, Lake Enriquillo), you need a month.
Is the north coast worth the detour? +
Yes: Cabarete is a world kitesurf spot, Puerto Plata has a Victorian center and a panoramic cable car, and the 27 waterfalls of Damajagua are a memorable canyoning day.
Can this loop be done without a car? +
Not smoothly. Long-distance buses (Caribe Tours, Metro) link big cities, but the north coast and the mountains are far better explored by rental car.
What's the best period for this loop? +
December to April: workable sea on the north coast, 27 to 30°C, whales in Samaná. Avoid August-September, hurricane peak, when the north coast is most exposed.
Is Jarabacoa family-friendly? +
Yes: the Baiguate and Jimenoa waterfalls, easy rafting and cool mountain air please families. Bring a sweater, evenings drop to 15°C at altitude.
