Adapt by season

December to April, with whales as a bonus

The dry season runs from December to April: clear skies, calm sea, 27 to 30°C. It's also the humpback whale window in Samaná bay, from mid-January to late March. From June to November, showers build and hurricane season peaks in August-September, a riskier window for the north coast. In summer, keep sea trips for the morning.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In February 2025, the 9am whale trip in Samaná bay gave me a full breach 30 m from the boat. The afternoon trip, rougher sea, sees fewer animals. Always aim for the morning.
  • Rent a car straight from the airport rather than depend on transfers: total freedom on the north coast.
  • Santo Domingo's Zona Colonial at the start: the oldest colonial city in the Americas walks in half a day.
  • Las Terrenas to finish quietly: Playa Cosón at sunset is a real highlight.
  • Sleep in Bayahibe rather than leave in the evening: it lets you do Saona early, before the groups.

⚠️ Would change

  • Add 1 night in Las Terrenas to enjoy the beaches without rushing.
  • Skip Bayahibe if you'd rather head straight north (Saona is doable from Santo Domingo as a long day).
  • Avoid night driving: potholes and unlit two-wheelers are common.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Do you need a visa for the Dominican Republic? +
No for most travelers: a tourist stay of up to 30 days needs no visa. A free electronic boarding card (e-Ticket) must be filled in before arrival and departure. Passport valid for the duration of the stay.
Is it better to rent a car or use transfers? +
For a resort-free road trip, the rental car is by far the most flexible. Main roads are decent. Just avoid driving at night outside towns.
When can you see whales in Samaná? +
From mid-January to late March, during the humpback whale breeding season. It's one of the best spots in the Caribbean. The morning trip, calmer sea, offers the best sightings.
Is one week enough beyond the all-inclusive? +
Yes for a first overview: Santo Domingo, Saona, Samaná and Las Terrenas give a fine balance of culture, beach and nature. To add the north coast or the central mountains, count 2 weeks.
What's the best period for this itinerary? +
December to April: clear skies, calm sea, 27 to 30°C, and whales as a bonus. Avoid August-September, hurricane-season peak, especially for the north coast.
Is this itinerary family-friendly? +
Yes: distances stay reasonable, the beaches (Saona, Cosón) and the El Limón waterfall please children. Plan child seats with the rental and frequent stops on long drives.
