How to get around

Itinerary logistics

A month combines a rental car, marshrutkas and a 4×4 for the high valleys. The Abano Pass (Tusheti) and the Ushguli track (Svaneti) need a 4×4 or an organised transfer; the rest is done by regular car.

🚗

Rental car

€30-45/day · the thread between regions · main roads good

🚙

4×4 for Tusheti and Ushguli

Adapt by season

Everything open only from June to September

A month covering the high mountains (Svaneti, Tusheti) really holds only in high summer: the Tusheti track over the Abano Pass (2,850 m) opens only from June to early October, and Svaneti needs clear passes. The Rtveli harvest in late September makes the best finale in Kakheti. The perfect window is therefore June to early October. Outside it, Tusheti is unreachable and Svaneti uncertain.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In July 2024 I crossed the Abano Pass to Tusheti by 4×4: six hours of cliff-edge track, then tower villages left out of time, with no signal and no paved road. It's the most remote region I've seen in the Caucasus, and the most striking of the month.
  • Giving Svaneti five days: between Mestia and Ushguli you can walk whole days without meeting anyone.
  • Ending in the south (Vardzia, Borjomi) rather than the mountains: the cave city and the spa waters make a gentler finish.

⚠️ Would change

  • Skip Batumi if you avoid seaside resorts and add time in Svaneti or Tusheti.
  • Time the month to July-August for Tusheti, the only period the Abano Pass is safe.
  • If you don't drive in mountains, arrange all 4×4 transfers ahead from Telavi and Mestia.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Isn't a month too much for Georgia? +
Not if you aim for the high valleys. The country is small, but Tusheti, Svaneti and their treks take time: you leave the main roads for regions where the road stops. It's the format for mountain and remote-village lovers.
Is Tusheti really accessible? +
Only from June to early October, via the Abano Pass (2,850 m), a 4×4-only track considered one of the most dangerous in the world. The region has no paved road and no reliable signal: that's its appeal, but it needs planning.
Do you need mountain driving skills? +
For the Tusheti and Ushguli tracks, an organised 4×4 transfer is best if you're not confident: local drivers know the passes. For the rest (west, Kakheti, Black Sea), a regular car is enough.
What budget for 30 days? +
Count around €2,400 backpacking, €3,200 in comfort and €5,200 and up premium, flight from Paris included, per person. Even with high-mountain 4×4s, Georgia stays very affordable.
Can you do this tour outside summer? +
Not in full. Tusheti closes by autumn and Svaneti becomes uncertain under snow. Outside summer, a two-week itinerary centred on the east, the Black Sea and the lowlands is better.
What's the best period for this grand tour? +
June to early October, the only window when Tusheti and Svaneti are open. Late September adds the Kakheti harvest. It's the ideal month to link high mountains, Black Sea and wine without sacrificing anything.
