How to get around

Itinerary logistics

A week can be done without a car if you like: marshrutkas (shared minibuses) between towns, Bolt in the city, and transfers for Kazbegi and Kakheti. A car stays more flexible for the cellars and villages.

🚐

Marshrutka

€1-8 by distance · shared minibuses · depart from bus stations

🚕

Bolt (app)

very cheap city rides · a reliable alternative to street taxis

🚗

Rental car

€30-45/day · handy in Kakheti · drive the military road carefully in winter

🥾

Hiking at Kazbegi

Gergeti reachable on foot (1h30) · the Truso valley is longer

Adapt by season

The mountains in summer, wine in autumn

From mid-May to early July and early September to mid-October, the climate is ideal: 20 to 26°C in Tbilisi, accessible mountains. The military road to Kazbegi can close after snowfall from November to April. For wine, aim for the harvest (Rtveli) from late September to mid-October: all of Kakheti buzzes. Winter still works for Tbilisi and skiing, but Kazbegi becomes uncertain by car.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In September 2024 I reached Kakheti during Rtveli, the harvest: a winemaker invited me to crush the grapes and taste the still-cloudy must. No standard tasting matches that moment, and out of season no one would have offered it.
  • Climbing to Gergeti church on foot rather than by 4×4: 1h30 of walking, but you earn the view of Kazbek.
  • Trying orange wine (amber, in qvevri) on the very first evening in Tbilisi: it's the country's signature.

⚠️ Would change

  • Keep one more night at Kazbegi for a real hike if the weather is clear.
  • Skip Davit Gareja if the border road is closed (it happens) and linger more in Sighnaghi.
  • Over 7 days, don't attempt Svaneti: too far, it deserves its own days.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Is one week in Georgia enough? +
Yes for the heart of the country: Tbilisi, the Kazbegi mountains and the Kakheti vineyards. Seven days cover the essentials of the east. Svaneti, to the west, needs more time and is best kept for two weeks.
Do French citizens need a visa? +
No. French nationals can stay up to 365 days visa-free in Georgia. A valid passport (or ID card, depending on the carrier) is enough.
Can you travel without a car? +
Yes. Marshrutkas (shared minibuses) link every town for a few euros, and the Bolt app covers Tbilisi. For Kakheti and its scattered cellars, a car or private transfer stays more practical.
Is Georgian wine worth it? +
Yes, Georgia is considered the cradle of wine, with 8,000 years of tradition and the UNESCO-listed qvevri method (buried jars). Kakheti is its heart; tastings at winemakers' are warm and affordable.
What's the best period? +
Mid-May to early July and early September to mid-October: mild climate, open mountains. The Rtveli harvest in late September is a highlight. Winter suits Tbilisi and skiing, but the Kazbegi road becomes uncertain.
How much does one week cost all in? +
Count around €900 backpacking, €1,250 in comfort and €2,600 premium, flight from Paris included, per person. Georgia remains one of the cheapest destinations in the region.
