How to get around

Itinerary logistics

Two weeks blend marshrutkas, a car and a 4×4 for Svaneti. The track to Ushguli needs a 4×4; the rest is done by regular car or shared minibus. Bolt covers Tbilisi.

€1-15 by distance · shared minibuses · dense network

🚗

Rental car

€30-45/day · handy for the west and Kakheti

🚙

4×4 for Ushguli

🥾

Svaneti treks

Mestia-Ushguli over 4 days possible · village guesthouses

Adapt by season

Svaneti only opens in the warm season

This full tour includes Svaneti, reachable mostly from June to October: the Zugdidi-to-Mestia road and the trek to Ushguli need clear passes. From November to May, snow often isolates the region. The Rtveli harvest from late September to mid-October is the best time for Kakheti. The ideal window to combine mountains and wine is therefore September to early October.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In September 2024 I pushed on to Ushguli along the track: arriving in that village of stone towers, the highest inhabited in Europe, facing snowy Shkhara, felt like a journey back in time. No photo prepared me for that silence.
  • Keeping three nights in Mestia: Svaneti deserves more than just passing through.
  • Ending with Kakheti and the wine: after the mountains, the Sighnaghi supras are a perfect reward.

⚠️ Would change

  • Skip Borjomi if time is tight and spend more time in Svaneti.
  • Do the Mestia-Ushguli trek over several days rather than by 4×4 if you like to walk.
  • Out of season (Nov-May), replace Svaneti with Batumi and the Black Sea, more accessible.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Is two weeks too much for Georgia? +
No, it's the ideal format to link east and west: capital, Greater Caucasus, Svaneti and its heritage, and Kakheti wine. The country is small but varied; two weeks avoid long back-to-back driving days.
Is Svaneti hard to reach? +
The Zugdidi-Mestia road is now paved (4-5h). For Ushguli, though, the mountain track needs a 4×4 or an organised transfer. The region truly opens only from June to October, snow aside.
Do you need a car, or are marshrutkas enough? +
Marshrutkas link every major town for a few euros. A car helps for the west and scattered Kakheti, but deep Svaneti (Ushguli) goes by organised 4×4 in any case.
What budget for 14 days? +
Count around €1,500 backpacking, €2,000 in comfort and €3,600 premium, flight from Paris included, per person. Georgia stays very affordable, even over two weeks.
Can you do this tour without hiking? +
Yes. The mountains (Kazbegi, Svaneti) offer sights reachable by car or cable car. Hiking enriches the trip but is never required; choose by your taste and the weather.
What's the best period? +
June to October, the only window when Svaneti is open. September to early October is ideal: mountains still passable and the Kakheti harvest. Avoid winter for this full tour, as Svaneti is often cut off.
