How to get around
A month requires a 4x4, essential for the Highlands F-roads (Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk) and the gravel roads of the Westfjords. All by car, no domestic flight. Budget ~€2,300 of 4x4 and fuel over 30 days, including the 2026 kilometre tax.
Rental 4x4
€2,200-3,500 a month · mandatory for F-roads and fords
Ferry Stykkishólmur → Westfjords

F-roads (Highlands)
Open mid-June to mid-September · 4x4 and fords required
Fuel and km tax
~€2/litre · 3,800 km, budget wide for the fjords
Adapt by season
The Westfjords and especially the Highlands (Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk) are only accessible in summer, from mid-June to mid-September, and require a 4x4 for the F-roads that cross rivers by ford. Outside this window, these regions are closed and the itinerary shrinks to Route 1. For a full month including the interior and the West, you must travel in July or August, when all tracks are open and rivers are fordable.
