How to get around

Itinerary logistics

A month requires a 4x4, essential for the Highlands F-roads (Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk) and the gravel roads of the Westfjords. All by car, no domestic flight. Budget ~€2,300 of 4x4 and fuel over 30 days, including the 2026 kilometre tax.

🚗

Rental 4x4

€2,200-3,500 a month · mandatory for F-roads and fords

⛴️

Ferry Stykkishólmur → Westfjords

An option to save time to the Westfjords

🛣️

F-roads (Highlands)

Open mid-June to mid-September · 4x4 and fords required

Fuel and km tax

~€2/litre · 3,800 km, budget wide for the fjords

Adapt by season

Highlands and Westfjords: summer only

The Westfjords and especially the Highlands (Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk) are only accessible in summer, from mid-June to mid-September, and require a 4x4 for the F-roads that cross rivers by ford. Outside this window, these regions are closed and the itinerary shrinks to Route 1. For a full month including the interior and the West, you must travel in July or August, when all tracks are open and rivers are fordable.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In August 2023, I gave five days to the Westfjords, the region everyone skips for lack of time: zero tour coaches, puffins by the thousand at Látrabjarg, and the Dynjandi waterfall all to myself. Over a month, it is the stop that makes the difference.
  • The Highlands midway through, once used to driving in Iceland: the Landmannalaugar fords look daunting but go fine in a high 4x4.
  • Book the Highlands huts months ahead: they are tiny and go fast.
  • Keep the Golden Circle and the South for the end, near Reykjavík before the flight.

⚠️ Would change

  • Skip part of the Westfjords if you fear the long gravel roads.
  • Add Heimaey island (Vestmannaeyjar) by ferry from the south for volcanoes and puffins.
  • Swap two Highlands days for rest if the 4x4 pace tires you.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Do I need a 4x4 for this full month? +
Yes, absolutely. The Highlands F-roads (Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk) require a 4x4 and river fords, forbidden to standard cars by law and insurers. The Westfjords also have gravel roads.
Isn't a month too much for Iceland? +
No, it is the ideal time to add the Westfjords and the Highlands to the Route 1 loop, two regions that shorter itineraries skip. It is Iceland in all its variety.
When are the Highlands accessible? +
From mid-June to mid-September only, when the F-roads are open and rivers fordable. Outside this window, these regions are closed and you fall back on Route 1.
Is this itinerary family-friendly? +
Better with teenagers: the Highlands fords and the long fjord gravel roads demand patience. For young children, prefer the 2-week itinerary on paved Route 1.
What is the best time to go? +
July and August only, so that all F-roads and fjord roads are open. The midnight sun also stretches the days, precious on so vast a route.
How much does a full month in Iceland cost? +
Around €4,500 backpacker, €5,600 comfort and €9,500 premium, flight from Paris included, per person. The 4x4 and the length weigh heavily on the budget.
