Adapt by season

Bright summer or winter auroras

In summer (June to August), the midnight sun gives up to 21 hours of light a day: you drive and sightsee late, and all roads are open. In winter (October to March), daylight drops to 4-5 hours, but it is the season of the northern lights and ice caves. The south coast stays accessible all year on paved roads; in winter, check road.is each morning and keep a 4x4 for safety on ice.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In July 2024, I drove until 10pm under the midnight sun: Reynisfjara beach at 9pm was nearly empty, while it overflowed at noon. In summer, shift the major sites to the evening, the light stays perfect and the crowd disappears.
  • The Golden Circle on day 2, before heading down the south coast: no backtracking.
  • The zodiac cruise at Jökulsárlón rather than just the viewpoint: you almost touch the icebergs.

⚠️ Would change

  • Skip the Blue Lagoon (expensive and crowded) for the Secret Lagoon or Sky Lagoon, both quieter.
  • Add a night in Vík to breathe if driving fatigue builds up.
  • On 7 days, do not attempt the full island loop: Route 1 is 1,322 km, the subject of the 2-week itinerary.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Is one week enough for Iceland? +
Yes for the South and the Golden Circle, the finest landscapes concentrated near Reykjavík. The full island loop (Route 1) needs at least 10 days, better 2 weeks.
Do I need a 4x4 for this itinerary? +
Not in summer: a compact car is enough for the South and the Golden Circle, all paved. In winter, an SUV or 4x4 is safer on ice. F-roads (Highlands) require a 4x4 but are not on this route.
Do I need to book accommodation in advance? +
Yes, absolutely. Vík, Jökulsárlón and the Golden Circle sell out months ahead in summer. Book 3 to 6 months in advance.
Is this itinerary family-friendly? +
Yes, the sites are accessible and close to the road. Watch children at Reynisfjara (dangerous waves) and on waterfall boardwalks, often slippery.
What is the best time to go? +
June to August for the midnight sun and all roads open. October to March for the northern lights and ice caves, with short days and a risk of ice on the roads.
How much does one week cost all in? +
Around €1,600 backpacker, €2,000 comfort and €3,600 premium, flight from Paris included, per person. Iceland remains an expensive destination.
