How to get around
A week by rental car, essential in Iceland where public transport is almost nonexistent. No domestic flight or ferry: everything runs on paved roads (routes 1, 35 and 54). Factor the new 2026 kilometre tax into the budget.
Rental car
€550-1,000 a week · compact for the South, SUV in winter
Fuel and km tax
~€2/litre · new 2026 kilometre tax to budget for
Site car parks
Free or €5-8 (Þingvellir, Seljalandsfoss)
Adapt by season
In summer (June to August), the midnight sun gives up to 21 hours of light a day: you drive and sightsee late, and all roads are open. In winter (October to March), daylight drops to 4-5 hours, but it is the season of the northern lights and ice caves. The south coast stays accessible all year on paved roads; in winter, check road.is each morning and keep a 4x4 for safety on ice.
