In brief

Seminyak & Canggu (Bali) in brief

  • 1

    Beachy, lifestyle and lively Bali

Beach clubs, brunches, shopping and sunsets. It's the beach counterpoint to Ubud, less culture, more sea.

  • 2

    Chic Seminyak, surf-and-nomad Canggu

Seminyak aims for comfort and beach clubs. Canggu, younger, revolves around surf and digital nomads.

  • 3

    A scooter is nearly essential

The distances between cafés, beaches and spots are best done on two wheels. Grab helps but is pricier and slow in traffic.

  • 4

Swim carefully, the waves are strong

Rip currents and rollers are serious. Swim between the flags, watched by the lifeguards.

  • 5

    Tanah Lot at sunset

The temple on its rock is the coast's iconic shot. Arrive 1h before dusk for the light.

FAQ

Seminyak & Canggu (Bali) FAQ

What's the difference between Seminyak and Canggu? +
Seminyak is more polished and established: comfortable hotels, established beach clubs, shopping and restaurants. Canggu is younger and more laid-back, centered on surf, cafés and the digital nomad community. Both sit on the southwest coast, 20 minutes apart.
Can you swim in Seminyak and Canggu? +
Yes, but the sea is powerful: rip currents and big waves. Always swim between the red and yellow flags, in zones watched by lifeguards. These are excellent surf spots precisely because of that swell.
Do you need a scooter in Seminyak and Canggu? +
It's nearly essential for moving freely between beaches, cafés and surf spots, which are often spread out. Otherwise, Grab and Gojek work well, but Canggu's traffic jams can stretch rides. Helmet mandatory and international license requested.
How many days to spend in Seminyak or Canggu? +
2 days are enough to combine beach, surf, a beach club and a Tanah Lot sunset. 3 days let you add an Uluwatu trip or an extra relaxing day. Many travelers use it as a base to explore southern Bali.
Do you need a visa for Bali? +
Yes, for all of Indonesia. Most travelers get a Visa on Arrival or apply online. See our Indonesia visa guide.
