In brief

Ubud (Bali) in brief

  • 1

The cultural and spiritual heart of Bali

Far from the beaches, Ubud lives to the rhythm of temples, traditional dance and crafts. Count at least 2 days, 3 to slow down.

  • 2

Stay in the center or on the edge of the rice fields

The center is handy for doing everything on foot. Nearby villages (Penestanan, Sayan) offer quiet and jungle views.

  • 3

    Scooter or private driver

Grab is restricted in Ubud. A scooter gives you freedom, a day driver (~โ‚ฌ40) simplifies the trips around.

  • 4

    Proper dress required in temples

Shoulders and knees covered. A sarong is usually lent or rented at the entrance of sacred sites.

  • 5

Dry season ideal from April to October

Clear skies, glowing rice fields. The rainy season (Nov-March) stays mild but with daily showers.

FAQ

Ubud (Bali) FAQ

How many days to visit Ubud? +
Minimum 2 days for the must-sees (Monkey Forest, Tegalalang, Tirta Empul, Campuhan). Ideally 3 days to add a cooking class, a yoga retreat and the Mount Batur sunrise hike.
Is Ubud by the sea? +
No. Ubud sits inland, in central Bali, about 1h from the southern beaches (Seminyak, Canggu). It's the culture, rice field and wellness destination, not the beach one.
How to get around Ubud without a motorbike license? +
The center is very walkable. For the rice fields and temples around, book a private day driver (about โ‚ฌ40), far simpler than Grab, which is restricted in the center by local drivers.
Is the Ubud Monkey Forest dangerous? +
The macaques are used to visitors but remain wild. Don't carry anything in hand (glasses, water, open bag), avoid prolonged eye contact and don't feed them. Incidents are rare if you follow these rules.
Do you need a visa to visit Ubud? +
Yes, as everywhere in Indonesia. Most travelers get a Visa on Arrival or apply online. See our Indonesia visa guide.
