FAQ

Grand Bay FAQ

How many days in Grand Bay? +

Grand Bay or east coast? +
Grand Bay for buzz, nightlife, accessibility (40 min from Port Louis), catamarans to the northern islands. East coast (Belle Mare, Trou d'Eau Douce) for long preserved beaches, calm and absolute luxury. Possible combo: 3-4 nights north + 3-4 nights east.
Should you rent a car in Grand Bay? +
Yes if you want to explore the island (Port Louis, Chamarel, Le Morne, south). No if you stay around Grand Bay/Pereybère/Mont Choisy: everything is walkable or by Bolt. Left-hand drive, vigilance, decent roads.
When to see whales in Mauritius? +
Season June to November, mostly the west coast (Tamarin, Le Morne). Trips from Grand Bay are possible but fewer than from the west. €60-90 a trip, strict ethical code (no approach, no contact).
Dive sites in Grand Bay? +
Trou aux Biches, 5 km from Grand Bay, holds the north's best spots: Bus Stop (reef), Stella Maru (30 m wreck), L'Aquarium (dense fauna), Whale Rock. PADI centers in Trou aux Biches and Grand Bay, €50-90 a dive, beginner dives available.
Do you need a visa for Mauritius? +
No for French and most EU travelers: 60 days visa-free with a passport valid through the stay. Confirmed return ticket and accommodation proof on arrival. See our [Mauritius visa guide](/en/destinations/mauritius/practical/visa-mauritius/).
