Caudan Waterfront for food and shopping

Restored harbor in the Cape Town style, restaurants with views, craft market, cinema, casino. Local weekend hangout and visitor base.

  • 4

    Central Market, the city's belly

End of Queen Street, open 6am-6pm. Fruit, fish, spices, dholl puri to taste on the spot. Watch pickpockets at peak hours.

  • 5

60 days visa-free for French travelers

Mauritius exempts French citizens from visa for 60 days (passport valid through stay). Confirmed return ticket and accommodation proof requested on arrival.

FAQ

Port Louis Mauritius FAQ

How many days for Port Louis? +
One to two days are plenty. Port Louis is mostly a cultural and historic gateway: market, Aapravasi Ghat, Caudan Waterfront, Citadel. Travelers rarely stay overnight, preferring Grand Bay in the north or Belle Mare in the east for the beach. Count one day in Port Louis + one day for Pamplemousses if you want to dig into the north.
Do you need a visa for Mauritius? +
No for French and most EU travelers: 60 days visa-free with a passport valid through the stay. Confirmed return ticket and accommodation proof on arrival. See our [Mauritius visa guide](/en/destinations/mauritius/practical/visa-mauritius/) for other nationalities.
Is Port Louis safe? +
Yes for the tourist center (Caudan, Aapravasi Ghat, Citadel) by day. Watch pickpockets at the Central Market at rush hour. The administrative center empties completely after 6pm, better swing to Caudan for the evening. No specific district to avoid by day.
How do you get to Port Louis from the airport? +
SSR/MRU Airport sits 50 km southeast of Port Louis. Taxi 1,500-2,000 MUR (~€30-40), 45-60 min. Express bus possible but less practical with luggage. Most hotels arrange the transfer (often included or ~€30).
Best season for Mauritius? +
May to November (austral winter): mild and dry, perfect for sightseeing and beach with 23-25°C sea. December-April (summer): hot (28-31°C) and humid, swimming 27°C, but cyclone peak January-March. October and November are excellent shoulders (attractive prices, stable weather).
What food to try in Port Louis? +
Mauritian cuisine is one of the most layered on earth: Indian, Chinese, Creole, French heritages. Specialties: dholl puri (yellow-pea flatbread), gâteau piment (lentil fritter), mine frite (fried noodles), fish vindaye (fish curry with mustard), Creole fried rice, alouda (milk/agar drink). Hit the Central Market for street food and Caudan for sit-down.
